Stuart stood at the window in his corner window, he had been lucky enough to get an office that had windows from the floor to the ceiling. He loved to watch the traffic go by as he was in deep thought about a problem for his work. He stood at the window for hours as his mind went crazy trying to sort things through and he knew that his work as a lawyer was changing people’s lives. He hoped the lives that were being changed were for the good, but he knew that the people that he had put in prison probably didn’t agree that he had changed their lives for the better.
When he had been a small child, he had tried to make all the people in his life happy by the mere fact of how he acted for them and how he treated them. He tried to show everyone that he could bless them with a smile, kind word, or even a listening ear. He tried to solve everyone’s problems which would make them happy and he would go around with his chest puffed out for a while. Stuart even had a t-shirt made up that said “I know how to solve everything.”
One day, his life came crashing around his feet when his best friend told him a problem that he had no idea on how to solve. His father had got fired from his job because he had shown up to work totally drunk and his boss had to let him go because of his stupidity. Now, when the father was home, he would beat his wife and then he would start to shove Luke around. Stuart knew that he had to help his best friend, Luke, but since his parents only showed him how much they appreciated and loved him. He had no idea where to start and who to go to for the help.
“Is that where you are getting all the bruises?”
“Yes, my dad would shove me around one day and the next day, he would show up with gifts for both my mother and me. We don’t know where he is getting the money and we are scared that one day some big, strong, men are going to show up at the house demanding their money. We are too scared to ask him since neither of us want to get the stuffing beat out of us. What do you suggest?”
“Honestly Luke, I have no idea what to tell you. Let’s go tell my dad since he works as a police officer and he will be able to tell us the right thing to do. How does that sound?”
“No, please don’t tell anyone what I told you. I was lying. My dad and I got into an argument and I was just mad at him. I wanted to get him into trouble, but not arrested. Please swear to me that you wouldn’t tell anyone. Promise?”
“I promise, but I don’t like the fact that your father is being mean to you. Promise me one thing, the next time he does it, we are going to tell my dad. You either promise that the next time, we will tell or I will go home right now and tell him. What is it?”
“I promise the next time, we will tell.”
