Hope for a World
“But I don’t have the strength to endure. I have nothing to live for.” (Job 6:11 NLT)
On a cold February winter day, a man driving furiously headed for the highway. With his three-month old daughter coddled in the back seat, his journey that day led over a large bridge that suspended 140-feet above the frigid Atlantic Ocean. In a fit of rage or anger or depression, this man wrapped his infant daughter in a knapsack and pushed her out the car window, over the ledge of the bridge and into the icy waters. What played in this man’s mind is beyond my understanding; but what can be determined from this incident and the many horrific tragedies taking place is that the world is missing something.
Often times it feels as if we are existing in a world completely consumed by darkness; the economy is still unstable, jobs are scarce, death is prevailing, and people are in a state of heartache. The actions of this father who threw his daughter over a bridge, and the actions of many others similar to this incident, are a sign of a world that has ran out of hope.
In a world filled with pain, anger, vengeance, depression, and death, hope may seem like a fairytale. But even in the darkness of night, God illuminates us with his peace and a hope for a new day. The Word of God soothes our pain when the psalmist said, “Weeping only endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning light (Psalm 30:5).” This encourages us to keep holding on in Christ; with the breaking of dawn darkness must cease and dissipate.
To hope in something is to look forward to with desire and trust; to exercise faith even in times when the outcome seems impossible. When we as believers put our hope in God, we are looking forward to his promise of peace through the storm and we trust in His Word and allow him to order our steps. To hope in Christ is to completely rely on Him and allow him to take control as we weather the storm. Our situations may seem impossible to handle in our own strength, but we serve a supernatural God who can handle any problem and cure any heartache.
When Job stated in today’s verse that he had nothing to live for and he did not have the strength to endure, at this point in his life, he was going through a very rough time. The enemy had taken his possessions, his family, his success, and his health----just about everything except his life. Job was holding on to a thin rope of hope that reminded him God was still God and even in the midst of this test, God was yet in control. But in a moment of weakness and weariness, Job’s strength gave in; in his limited viewpoint all he saw was death, but God had greater in stored for him.
At times, the storms may frustrate us and wear us down to the point we want to throw up our hands and give up, but God is yet God and He is still in control. He will not let the storm overtake us, but just as he promised he is right there by our sides. In fact, God has greater in stored for us waiting once the storms passes over. Job’s materialistic possessions were restored, and he also learned of the peace and joy and stillness that only God can give through turbulent times.
It may seem dark and dismal in your life right now, but keep holding on until the breaking of day. Morning will come and with it is hope and peace. Anger may be raging strong inside you, but God said vengeance shall be His (Romans 12:19), pain and heartache may be eating away at your soul, but the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and he saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). You may be feeling lonely, lost, and confused, but God said He will never leave you nor will He forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Keep holding on to life and watch the Lord carry you through.
Though darkness encamps around me and I cannot see my way,
There in the midst of the thick blackness is a small breaking of day.
Just a small spectrum of light that guides my feet,
That scatters darkness and conquers defeat.
With each morning’s sunrise, to Your mercy I awoke,
And with the breaking dawn there is brand new hope.
