Look To Laughter
© 2014
by
Stephen A. Peterson
Even in laughter the heart may ache, and rejoicing may end in grief.
--Proverbs 14:13 (NIV)
Hurrying to get to the bus stop, one of Marla McDowell’s high heels broke causing her to fall forward resulting her tearing her stockings, ruining her brand new pair of shoes and hitting her head on the pavement leaving a knot on her head the size of a golf ball. While down, she paused for a second before struggling up then burst out laughing.
A passer-by having observed what had happened to Marla saw no fun in what had just happened. She asked Marla: “What’s so funny? Why are you laughing about what just happened to you?”
Marla replied: Ma’am, I’m laughing so I won’t cry.”
All of us occasionally hit rough times in life and suffer very painful, sometime embarrassing falls. Despite what many may think, it is actually a good time to laugh at ourselves! If we do not laugh, one will find that we lose part of who we are. Laughter is a safety net that allows us to work through tensions of irritation. If this safety net does not work, one will eventually become a sourpuss and become someone people may be unable to live with.
Prayer:
Almighty Father, day to day life can be such a challenge draining me of life’s true worth. Laughter is Your gift bring peace and joy to the rigors of daily living. Lord, I pray You permit me the opportunity to bring peace, happiness and joy to everyone I meet in spite of the things I may suffer with Your gift of laughter. This I pray in Your Most Holy Name. Amen.
