A New Name Written Down In Glory
I am six years old. I want to ask Jesus into my heart. I know the words; have since I was little. “Dear Jesus, Uh...” Mom comes in, sits beside me. She knows the words. I say them. My name is written in the book! The angels are singing for me.
The Satin Dress
Gripping Dad’s arm, my throat tight, I breathe, smile, go. At the end of the aisle he waits. Mom stands, our eyes meet. Memories glisten in hers. I touch the satin of my dress, her dress 24 years ago. A new life begins. The old one remains. A circle ever growing.
She is tired of hearing how much she looks like me. “Really Mom, how would you have liked to know what you were going to look like when you grew up?” She goes to her room, disgruntled. Later she comes back, happy now, “I thought of something good about knowing what you are going to look like when you grow up.”
Pleased, I inquire, “What’s that, Sweetie?”
She replies seriously, “You know the things you need to change.”
I want to grow up to look like Jesus. I hear Him say to me, “You know the things you need to change.”
Her smile is big. She grips her new driver’s license, keys rattling, “Bye Mom, I love you.” Going, going, not yet gone, but I see that place from where I stand. Everything is changing for her. Everything is changing for me. “Drive carefully, Sweetie. I love you too.”
I look at my daughter cradling her daughter. A grandmother! How did that happen so fast? Such a strange thing time is; passing by almost unnoticed until it stops for a moment, forcing recognition. A new generation born: time pushing me ahead in such a lovely way.
