Trials Upon The Way
I trod the Pilgrim pathway until I kicked my toe,
Then sat I down on a rock and wallowed in my woe.
Woe for me, how disagreeable, how totally unjust,
That such a one as I should hurt my toe upon the dust.
I cried, I howled, I moaned, and then I whined again some more.
Till I convinced myself and others my toe was really sore.
Then asked I, “My Lord why let this happen to such as I?”
It’s terribly unfair and mean.” So started I to cry.
But as my moaning and complaints at last did reach their peak,
A fellow Christian did step forward and asked if he might speak.
But, “What say you?” I asked instead, showing him my toe,
“Am I not mortally wounded? - To travel on I cannot go!”
Well, he took a look then bound my toe with a little bandage tape,
Then, “Nay,” said he, “I don’t agree, your wound is but a scrape.”
At that my jaw fell to the floor, how dare this man offend,
But said he, “Hear from God’s Word - to it we should attend.”
And so it was he spoke of Paul and the perils he went through,
Till embarrassment took hold on me and I started to weep anew.
For he told of perils in the water, then perils of robbers too,
Perils by Paul’s own countrymen, false brethren and heathen too.
Perils in the city, the wilderness and in the sea,
I wept for Paul and all his perils, those tears were not for me.
Paul endured, he did not rest, he kept on in the race,
Yet, here was me, a coward, a fool, with my hands I hid my face.
Lord, forgive Your servant please, for the whining that I do,
Please give me courage, give me strength to witness for You true.
Let me not be a whiner Lord, help me stand each day the test,
And when troubles rise help me to fight a good fight and not to rest.
For if when perils come to us we fall and will not try,
What use are we to the Master’s cause if all we do is cry.
Trials they do work patience, which brings experience then hope,
And hope won’t make us ashamed, for Jesus helps us cope.
So trust the Lord, cleave to him, as you walk the Pilgrim Way,
He will give you strength through trials, so trust Him all the way.
