“Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.” - Nehemiah 9:12
In the course of his prayer, Ezra remembered that God will ever guide and lead His child in the way of life. The Lord spoke concerning the place He would take the children of Israel to and He did not forsake nor depart from them. Despite the ways in which they erred, He yet remained the light leading them by day and the fire leading them by night, “Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.” [Nehemiah 9:12].
He brought those who strove against them to hinder them, on their knees. For they were children of covenant and He showed Himself to be their Guide and Defender, “And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.” [Nehemiah 9:11].
God knew you before you came to be. Your name was known to Him even before you were conceived, just as He knew the children of Israel before Abraham was formed and the Lord drew out your life programme, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee..." [Jeremiah 1:5a]. Therefore, the God who knows the things He has aforetime planned concerning you is well able to lead you, guide you and direct you into that for which He has created you, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” [Psalm 32:8].
It pays to surrender and let Jesus take the wheel. One can so easily, without knowing, start striving to be in the driving seat perhaps because we may feel that that we know what we want. But the Lord Almighty knows what we do not know, “And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: he clave the rock also, and the waters gushed out.” [Isaiah 48:21].
The path of life is filled with decisions and choices. Amidst it all, when we depend on the Lord to be our guide, it brings peace, fulfillment and joy. May the Lord help us to surrender our will and allow Him to direct our footsteps, to the glory of His holy name.
