Rest in the Cleft

He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defense; I shall not be moved.  (Psalm 62:6 / KJV)

As we completed some yard work, a tiny frog hopped under my husband’s truck and tucked himself into the cleft between the back tire and the driveway. He looked out at the world around him, completely satisfied with his new hiding place. He probably thought he was secure from all potential threats. Of course, he didn’t realize that it was actually not a totally safe location. We would have to make sure that he was out of the way before the truck could be moved.

When we hide in the cleft of our Rock, we are completely safe and secure. Jesus is our perfect Protector. He is immovable and unchanging (unlike the position of the truck tire). When I tried to coerce the frog to move from under the truck, he seemed perturbed that I would do such a thing. He did not want to be displaced from what seemed to him to be a safe haven. With Christ as our Savior, we can tuck ourselves into the cleft of the Rock and not be moved.

Lord, help our souls to rest in the cleft and find safe refuge in You. Amen.
