Something besides the movie, "Noah" which will be happening in 2014 is the beginning of construction of Ken Ham's "Ark Encounter." Ken Ham is the president and founder of Answers In Genesis (AIG), and was the opponent of Bill Nye in the recent creation-evolution debate.
Construction of the "Ark Encounter" will begin in May, with a completion date expected in the summer of 2016, at a cost of 73 million dollars. Ironically, the debate with Bill Nye, who is an atheist and gives no credibility to the Genesis story of Noah and the flood, helped provide much needed funding for the project. There is huge public interest in this, pro and con, with 135 comments on one web page alone.
It will be built on an 800 acre plot of land off interstate 75 near Wilmington, Kentucky, 50 miles south of Cincinnati. Construction of the life-size ark and accompaning theme park is based on a belief that the story of Noah is true and literal. Recently, a noted television host said that 60 percent of adult Americans believe that it is true. This raises several important questions. Is there evidence of a worldwide flood? Is there evidence that a real ark existed? What about evidence for a young earth, as opposed to one being millions of years old, as the evolutionists like to say? Was the earth reconstructed after a worldwide flood?
Is the Bible true? There have been several unconfirmed sightings from the air by people flying over Mt. Ararat. The Bible specifically says in Genesis 8:4 that the ark came to rest on the mountains (plural) of Ararat. It is interesting that Mt. Ararat is actually several peaks, so the Bible is very precise in what it says.
What about a young earth? The oldest living tree is 4300 years old. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is less than 4200 years old. The Sahara Desert has been dated at 4000 years. Mt. St. Helens in Washington State gave evidence after its eruption in 1980, to rapid reconstruction. In fact, one web page listed 101 evidences for a young earth.
Is their evidence for a worldwide flood? Genesis 7:13-24 says that all of the mountains were covered and all life perished, except for Noah and his family and the two of every kind of animals. A man by the name of Ballard, the person who discovered the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, took a submersible under the Black Sea and saw detailed remnants of an ancient civilization.
What is the real "theme" of the theme park being planned by Ken Ham? God's judgment came upon the earth thousands of years ago. We are at a time of judgment now, when those who are being faithful to God are being ridiculed, just like Noah was in his day, but will be spared. Will you be among those? The bigger question than what will the "Ark Encounter" be like is, have you encountered the One, Jesus, who can spare you from judgment? Have you had the "Jesus Encounter?" Romans 3:19 tells us that the whole world is accountable before God.
