After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His Spirit”. (NKJV)
Jesus had already suffered hours of extreme agony and abuse, as He hung upon the cross. He had also probably been deprived of food and water since the Passover meal of the night before. When He said “I thirst” His body was probably dehydrating from the loss of blood, excessive sweating (Luke 22:44) and the lack of water. His thirst was the deepest, driest thirst that any man could ever know. It was like the hopeless, helpless, eternal thirst of hell. What He really needed at that time was a pitcher of cool water, but He was given sour wine. He accepted it as the final painful step He had to take, and knew that His work was done.
The Holy Spirit wants to touch your heart as you read this message, and maybe these specific words are for you:
1) You may be someone who was given “sour wine” when you were expecting something else. Perhaps you have suffered many disappointments in the recent past, which have shaken your faith in God and man, and affected your perceptions of life. Things may not have gone very well for you up to now, but the Lord Jesus wants you to begin to expect the good “wine” which He has for you. He has joy and peace in store for you if you will receive from His cup and drink deeply. In Jesus’ mighty name, I break the cycle of negative expectation off your life. I bind every lie of the enemy and every distraction he brought against you, in Jesus’ name, amen. God loves you and is with you and He has good plans for you. There is sweetness and glory in the cup He is offering you. There is a hope and a wonderful future!
2) Perhaps you are someone who has been facing one battle after the other, and this has made you feel so weary, weak and discouraged that you have been saying to yourself that you cannot live this way any more. The Holy Spirit says to you today “It is finished”. Your battle is over. Jesus already fought the fight to spare you the pain of what you have been going through. Release it all to the Lord today dear friend, and know that you can cast all your cares upon Him because He cares for you. You are entering a season of recovery and deep rest. There is a cup of healing from Heaven for you. Abba is realigning many things in your life, and bringing you to a place of peace. Believe it and receive it today, in Jesus’ name, hallelujah!
3) Finally, you are someone who says “I thirst” because you are so deeply thirsty for more of the presence of God. Jesus said “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled! (Matthew 5: 6). He has so much more in store for you, friend. You are heading for higher ground. God is pouring out His presence and His fullness into your life, and you are entering a season of revival, as He leads you by the hand into the deeper things of the Spirit. Deep calls to deep as He is calls you closer to His heart.
Dear friend, the Lord Jesus has already paid the full and final price. We do not have to carry a cross or be nailed to it because He has already accomplished everything that was necessary. He bore on His own body what we should have borne on ours. He changed our destiny. He gave us the keys to freedom when He declared that it was finished! We do not have to suffer thirst or struggle any more because we have become joint heirs to all the holy inheritance Jesus has died to give us. We are now partakers of the cup of joy. We can drink of the sweet new wine and be filled with it. The battle really is finished! Be blessed today, and walk always in His victory, in Jesus’ name, amen!
