Luke 12:39, 40 (NIV) “But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him.”
I was a Boy Scout growing up; I still remember the Boy Scout Pledge and our motto “Always be prepared”. Each week we gathered and worked on the skills needed to complete a new merit badge. One does not realize it at 13, but the skills learned through the completion of these merit badges really does help one to become more “prepared” for life’s situations. There are more than 130 merit badges a Boy Scout may obtain like archery, camping, dentistry, fire safety, even nuclear sciences. Each badge is intended give the scout a unique set of skills that he may need at some point in his life.
Jesus warns us in today’s scripture to “Always be prepared”; was Jesus a Boy Scout? He probably would have been if scouting had been around 2000 years ago. “You also must be ready” He warns; ready for what? His return; “because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him.” What merit badge should we work on if we are to “be ready”? The “Rapture” merit badge perhaps; where Christians develop the skills needed to ensure of their “taking up”. Successful completion of this merit badge would include the mastery of such skills as the Bible, prayer, obedience, and humility. Work on your “Rapture” merit badge today, because tomorrow may be too late.
