Writers who are called or chosen to write or pen articles of testimonies or stories of redemption need to be aware of the responsibility and power that they have when they put pen to paper or sit down to write. Words can inspire, enlighten, cut and kill, build up or tear down.
*Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Proverbs 18:21 KJV
There is that speaketh like the piercing of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. Proverbs 12:18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. Mathew 15:18
Redemption testimonies appeal & interest the multitudes, from believers living to serve Christ, to the non-believers in the midst of sinfulness and even the people sitting on the pews in religious congregations.
Written material, music and media influence the minds of adults and youth alike. Many people read books, watch movies or listen to music as a sort of escape from their own real life circumstances.
Today people are killing and dying in record numbers. The news, music and written material in all forms have a powerful impact and influence in the lives of men, women and children crossing every cultural back ground. With that being said, writers who are Christian and secular, have a great responsibility.
In the mid eighty’s gangsta rap hit the scene and forever changed the world. Songs glorifying cop killers, racism, drug dealing, gang & criminal lifestyles to promiscuous sex and more. People from all walks of life started to imitate and glorify what they were hearing. Every single year since then, there are thousands if not hundreds of thousands more people who are joining gangs, going to jail and prison, dying and killing, this alone should wake up even the secular community and prove that all writers need to carefully consider everything they share.
Scriptures in the Bible say, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. “ –Proverbs 22.6
The total opposite is what we see in many movies that glorify and promote negative lifestyles that send the message to many of us that the only way out of poverty is to take by force or to involve ourselves in criminal and sinful lifestyles.
To name just a few that personally altered my view of what life could be for me in my own future are movies such as Bad Boys 1983, New Jack City 1991, Scar Face 1983, Less than Zero 1987, Good Fella’s 1990, King of New York 1990, the God Father.

Growing up in a dysfunctional home, I found my escape in fiction movies, secular music and urban culture writings. I would watch movies, listen to music and read material that glorified gang and criminal lifestyles as well as addictions, violence and chaos.
By the age of 19 I was arrested and faced hundreds of years in prisons, I was so impacted by everything I read, listen to and watched that I was out of control, living violently with addictions to drugs, alcohol and money. I spent 15 plus years inside some of America’s bloodiest prisons. Thirteen of those years I walked with satan never considering that CHRIST had His hand on me the entire time.
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 1Timothy 1:15
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28
To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1:79
And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enable me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; 1Timothy 1:12
Today I am a friend and servant of Christ Jesus, anointed and appointed only because of His love and forgiveness.
In this world today I can legally represent and use titles such as Pastor, writer, evangelist, gang intervention expert simply because of my own real life experience and educational training, however, only because of JESUS CHRIST and His love and forgiveness, am I anointed and appointed to serve the kingdom.
I agree with you that what we read, hear and see influences our lives in a powerful way. It is important that you share this with others as you have done in writing this article and I feel sure it will bring others to Christ.
