Jesus set his face “like a flint” scripture says enroute to Jerusalem and his destiny there. Flint is used to spark a fire. Indeed Jesus was about to set Jerusalem on fire with his words and actions, as the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples and upon all the Jewish religious world of that day. The fire spread to the entire world and is still burning today, albeit in some places more than others. Tongues of fire appeared over the believers as they gathered at Pentecost.
James 3 tells us how our tongues are like flames that can set the very course of nature on fire with another kind of fire that comes from hell. It also says our tongues bear a deadly poison almost like a poisonous snake. That is why, as someone aptly said, our tongues must remain behind “bars”, the bars of our teeth. They can never be reformed enough to be released from their cells this side of Christ’s return. Our tongues then are serving a “life sentence.” Unless they break out of jail unlawfully, they can only be let out of their cells in the custody of the Holy Spirit, for example, to praise the Lord or to proclaim His Word or to edify another. We are actually stoking a heavenly revival fire spilling our way from among the angels when we praise and proclaim God’s truth. Imagine these flames being fanned to gigantic heights as we sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs and make Biblical proclamations! ( Astronomers say that the flames leaping from the surface of the sun are shooting as high as 40 times the diameter of the sun. ) Envision by faith the wicked strongholds of the enemy over our families and churches and communities being burnt to a crisp through our participation in this white hot zeal of the Lord of Hosts! We will declare that only the zeal of the Lord of Hosts has accomplished this!
