Jephthah went into battle and foolishly vowed to give God the first thing that came out of his home if the Lord would give him victory over the Ammonites. This event is a reminder to each of us not to get stuck in our shortsighted goals making vows we may not want to keep, but to trust in the Lord's long-term plan for us. There must be a famine before the feast sometimes.
"We beg for God to fulfill some shortsighted goal, and in obtaining it, we miss God's best."
Recovery Bible
Based on Judges 29
I forfeit begging
for my shortsighted goals, Father
May I close my eyes
and walk in trust
along the path
you have for me
Knowing and believing
this is best
I loose my grip
upon the things
I cannot control
that I cannot have
Shortsighted desires
that would only
bring me future woe
I can only conclude
Release my strings
from them
Knowing the best
and perfect plan
is yet to come
May I not cry out
vows
in my emotional state
choking back the urge
and obediently
waiting
upon you, Lord
Waiting upon you
