Lionel and Alexis took Ben, Matthew, and Stephanie on a tour of the San Juan Capistrano mission and explained its history. Stephanie, feeling homesick, texted her younger sister, Elizabeth, to keep her updated on her adventure and see how Elizabeth and their parents were doing.
HERE'S THE NEXT PART OF THE STORY...
Four days after the trip to the mission of San Juan Capistrano, the day started off kind of boring for the travelers. Without any television or Internet or radio, the group just sat around and talked to each other. Alexis decided to tell the kids a story of why she decided to marry Lionel. "One of the things I noticed about him when I first saw him is that he looks like Erik Estrada," she said.
Ben, Stephanie, and Matthew looked puzzled. "Who in the world is he?" they asked.
"He used to be on a TV show called CHiPs, a cop show about two California Highway Patrol guys, back in the seventies and eighties," Alexis explained. "Many girls such as myself had a big crush on him. His smile was so handsome. He was basically a teen idol."
"Do you think I'll ever make it to being a teen idol?" Ben asked.
"Only if you ditch those silly clothes," Stephanie responded.
Alexis continued. "But that wasn't the most important reason I married him," she said with a playful grin. "I married him because of what's on the inside. In Lionel I saw a sweet, sensitive, and caring man who loves the Lord and looks out for me. So, you see, there's more to a person than how they look on the outside. It's what's on the inside that really counts."
"And I married Alexis for the same reason. She is sweet and caring and everything I always wanted in a woman. She is just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside," Lionel said, giving his wife a kiss.
Half an hour later everyone was looking at either a book or a magazine. Suddenly they heard thunder. They looked outside and saw that the sky had gotten very dark. Before long, heavy rain started falling!
Everyone was really scared. "I have to get the ship to a dock and get it tied up immediately! There's no time to lose!" Lionel cried, rushing up to the top of the ship to steer the boat.
"Ben and Matthew, close all the windows tightly and make sure no water gets into the ship, or we'll all drown," Alexis said worriedly. She handed Stephanie a rope. "Here, Stephanie, take this rope up to Lionel. Hurry!"
The kids rushed to do their jobs. Stephanie ran out onto the deck and started climbing a ladder to get to Lionel and give him the rope. Just as she had gotten halfway up the ladder, a large gust of wind hit her, and Stephanie fell into the churning sea, screaming!
"Alexis, Ben, Matthew!" Lionel cried. "Stephanie has fallen into the sea! Quick, Matthew, throw her this lifesaver!" He handed Matthew a lifesaver, and Matthew tossed it into the ocean, but it missed Stephanie! Stephanie tried to swim to it to get it, but the ocean was too rough. The waves pulled her back further out into the ocean.
"Help me! Help me!" she screamed as she struggled to keep her head above the water.
Ben jumped into the water, giving no thought to the dangers of the sea. "Lord Jesus, please help me get to Stephanie on time," he prayed as he swam quickly toward her. When he got to Stephanie, she had fainted and was going under the water. Ben dove under, grabbed Stephanie by the waist, and carried her back to the ship. "She's alive," he assured everyone. "She's just passed out. Stand back while I give her CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. I'm trained in this. My dad's a pilot, and I want to follow in his footsteps. This is one of the first things he taught me. He said it was important to know in case planes ever crashed." He laid Stephanie on the deck, and everyone else backed away as Ben administered CPR. While he was administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, Stephanie came to and surprised Ben--and everyone else--by kissing Ben on the lips!
Stephanie confesses to Ben that her feelings for him have changed, that she sees who he is inside because of his bravery and concern, and she apologizes for not giving him a chance before. They kiss. When they dock, a deck hand tells Ben and Stephanie a little more about their bracelets. Read the next episode of THE MYSTERIOUS CITIES OF GOLD REVISITED.
