My Fellow Builders My Heroes

When Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the broken down wall that surrounded and kept the city safe, he was delighted that he was accompanied by a dedicated group of willing workers. He had previously surveyed the damaged wall and then meticulously outlined the case for rebuilding to the Jews, and they were motivated to do the necessary work. Nehemiah could record with deep satisfaction the sentiments of the volunteers, "Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work." (Nehemiah 2:3)

What beautiful and uplifting words these must have been to Nehemiah, "Let us rise up and build" since he knew that he could not do the task on his own and it would take a combined effort from others for the project to succeed.

Visionaries are blessed with the foresight to know what has to be done but their most blessed and vital skill is in getting others to buy into their vision and to participate. Some visionaries just dream and fill their heads with endless possibilities; and their dreams die with them, while others use their dreams to motivate and inspire and persuade others to achieve practical results.

I have not found a single believer, in truth one such may not exist, that does not believe in the "Lord's Prayer" as taught by Jesus in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4; and especially where it says, "your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." All believers want to see a touch of heaven come to earth, we want to see holiness in all its glorious manifestations and we want to see the earth reborn, resplendent and fit for human habitation; and we want humanity to know and love God, as the prophet puts it, "For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea." (Habakkuk 2:14)

True, some things will have to await the coming of the Millennium when Jesus Christ returns and rules, "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them." (Isaiah 11:6) but in the meantime God's children are to live right, "Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world. " (Titus 2:12) and help all those we can, to come on board, "And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh." (Jude 1:22-23)

Just as the physical wall surrounding Jerusalem was important for the inhabitants' safety and protection, and Nehemiah deeply lamented the reproach caused by its disrepair, so too are all conscientious believers concerned and committed to rebuilding and maintaining the wall of Christian values that is so vital for the spiritual health and morality of humanity now and in the future.

So everywhere I look, I am enormously encouraged for I see rebuilding and maintenance going extremely well on the wall of Christian values, I see women and men who are dedicated and caring doing their best in spite of harassment and sarcasm and the general onslaught of the Sanballats and Tobias, and the many shenanigans of the enemies of Jesus Christ.

I see fellow workers with sleeves rolled up, backs bent, sinews strained almost to breaking point doing much heavy lifting, all for the cause of Jesus Christ and to give their fellow man a fighting chance to get redemption.

I see them tired and weary but still going, I see them sorrowful and pained but refusing to give up, I see them disappointed at times but still hopeful and resilient and I am reminded of what Paul said, "We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed." (2 Corinthians 4:8-9)

These are our true heroes of modern-day spiritual endeavours, these are the ones with sacred cudgels in their hands, bravery and love in their hearts, stamina and resolve in their souls that would shame a wolf. And they are prepared to die for the cause of Jesus Christ while doing this important work out of a sense of duty; to both God and man.

These are my fellow builders and my heroes; and although they are unsung and unheard of in the main, they are certainly not unfamiliar to almighty God, and the host of heaven, for the Bible tells us that each and everyone will receive his reward, "...for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." (Galatians 6:9)

Here on the web and across the internet many valiant, spiritual warriors, all heroes of mine, are engaging the enemy of Jesus Christ and rebuilding the wall of Christian values, and on this platform at faithwriters.com the fight is no less intense and ongoing. Time and space would not permit all but some of these great spiritual fighters are worthy of being mentioned.

What of Pastor Dan White, a writer giving general encouragement and spiritual advice to all, and who has drawn deep from his years of teaching and administration, and is a valiant fighter for truth and the upliftment of believers, who has contributed over 110 articles to the joy of us all.

What of Winnie Kaetzel, an evangelist and trainer of Christian leaders, an insightful and fastidious writer and an encourager of the faithful whose work for God is voluminous.

What of Pam Ford Davis, whose insightful writing and pearls of wisdom are as bountiful and welcome as tomorrow's sunrise, and whose 1800 plus articles have helped many along the way, this writer being among them, and for whom astute devotionals are an essential part of her vast range of well written pieces.

What of Manuel Vargas, a writer who has contributed over 160 articles, and whose delight is, as he puts it, "...sharing everything that God is leading me to teach from a practical approach to experiencing His Word in our lives" and whose work in rebuilding spiritual values is evident.

What of Collette McFarland who has contributed over 180 articles of depth, wisdom and interest and ever so joyful to read and all dealing with contemporary situations from a new and refreshing perspective.

What of Joanne Liaw Sook Ling, a contributor of 25 fine articles and a stellar performer for God across a wide range, whose undertaking is, in her own words, "...seeking to glorify God, to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost and to encourage her brothers and sisters in Christ to grow in spiritual maturity."

What of Charles Robey the writer of over 330 wide-ranging, thoughtful articles, whose solid understanding of the scriptures and fine judgments are inspiring and comforting and his aim to give, "...encouragement and strength to the Christians as well as draw the sinners into a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ" is being fully accomplished.

What of Minoli Haththotuwa who has written over 180 great, useful, interesting articles and whose portfolio of ministry contains so much, "...including teaching, preaching, evangelism, worship, the development of Biblical educational material, as well as women's ministries and missionary outreach projects..." and whose passion for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as ever, remains undimmed.

What of Ethel C . Pechman whose brilliantly frank writing of 34 articles is a must read and great encouragement for all believers as she dips her pen, with passion and panache, into the ink of gold and communicates with clarity because, "I love to write about different ideas. And I love to help people with their problems."

And what of the indomitable duo Mike and Bea Edwards, performers par excellence, portraying fine examples of practical Christian ministry on a day by day basis, whose commitment, dedication and intensity to rebuilding the wall of Christian values is both admirable and inspirational and who, by lifting up holy hands everywhere, encouraging, organizing, facilitating, shows how it can be done to the honour and glory of Almighty God.

All these, and many more just like them, are my heroes and time and space would not permit to tell you about Christopher Seed the master of encouragement, Rev. Brian Mathis the giver of comfort and guidance, Mark Trodd who points you to the Bible, and John Livingston Clark whose commitment to Youth advice and guidance is well documented.

To all these heroic rebuilders and maintainers of this precious wall of Christian values, and the many unsung ones doing valiantly in their quiet and determined way, be reminded that the work is far from done; but thank you so much for caring, and working for Jesus Christ, and giving the young ones of today and the ones yet to be born a fighting chance of redemption, and for helping our world to become a better place for humans to live.

Enough said.
