We understand from the previous article “Praying for Spiritual Gifts”, that Paul Prayed for the Church of Corinth that they COME BEHIND IN NO GIFT. UNTIL JESUS RETURNS (1 Corinthians 1:7 NKJV) (I paraphrased the verse.)
Secondly, we saw that Paul said to DESIRE SPIRITUAL GIFTS; But earnestly DESIRE THE BEST GIFTS. And yet I show you a more excellent way (1 Corinthians 12:31 NKJV)
Pursue love, and DESIRE SPIRITUAL GIFTS, but especially that you may prophesy (1 Corinthians 14:1 NKJV)
We need to take a closer look at DESIRE, PRAYER and EXPERIENCING SPIRITUAL GIFTS. I was going to teach on some other Prayer—but the Holy Spirit told me to write a follow-up article focusing on the development of the DESIRE we actually have in our hearts to enter into PRAYER and to EXPERIENCE SPIRITUAL GIFTS.
The Scriptural Facts about SPIRITUAL GIFTS
We sometimes fail to understand things that we cannot see or explain, then as a result we either shy away or fail to look into the Truth of what God intends for us to experience—especially SPIRITUAL GIFTS. However, the moment when we are Born-again there is a Divine hunger for SPIRITUAL GIFTS—(or better said, for more of GOD and to be used by Him). I say this carefully so that people who are afraid of SPIRITUAL GIFTS will not freak out. But the Factual and Biblical reality is that we are all in DESIRE of wanting to EXPERIENCE more of GOD and to be used by Him.
For example, let me share some fundamental Biblical Facts;
1. The Holy Spirit is the one who brings us into the Kingdom of God—by way of the New Birth (or the Born-again Experience) (see John 3:1-16 NKJV)
2. When we are Baptized in the Holy Spirit we are empowered to live as great witnesses to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ (Acts 1:5-8/ 2:1-20 NKJV)
3. The third thing we sometimes over-look is that the Holy Spirit is—1. Inside of us. 2. And He has along with Him all the SPIRITUAL GIFTS and all the SPIRITUAL FRUIT that we need--to do the work of God on the earth. (Meditate on this!)
Overcoming the Fear Factor of Spiritual Gifts
When Paul was writing to the Church at Corinth about DESIRING SPIRITUAL GIFTS, Paul had to re-establish confidence at the Corinthian Church about SPIRITUAL GIFTS, and teach them the proper use of Spiritual Gifts. Some people at the Church of Corinth were very skeptical of Spiritual Gifts, because those who were Baptized in the Holy Spirit were speaking in tongues during Church services disorderly, and they were scaring other believers and unbelievers. So Paul had to write extensively to bring order to the Church about speaking in tongues. You can read the entire chapter 14 of first Corinthians and see what Paul wrote. But he clearly pointed out to DESIRE SPIRITUAL GIFTS (1 Corinthians 12:31/ 14:1 NKJV)
Paul’s Intention to get us back on track with Spiritual Gifts
1. Paul said earnestly DESIRE THE BEST GIFTS (1 Corinthians 12:31 NKJV)
2. Purse love (1 Cor. 14:1 NKJV)
3. And DESIRE SPIRITUAL GIFTS (1 Cor. 14:1 NKJV)
4. But especially that you may prophesy (1 Cor. 14:1 NKJV)
Paul never gave up on the use of Spiritual Gifts being exercised in a Church service. Paul, on the contrary, sought to restore order of how Spiritual Gifts are to be exercised so it will not scare anyone, but draw people to the faith.
Earnestly DESIRE THE BEST GIFTS
What are all the Spiritual Gifts that Paul taught about? Paul taught about Spiritual Gifts in 3 Letters—Romans, 1 Corinthians and Ephesians.
Paul Mentioned 7 Gifts in Romans 12:6-8; Prophecy, Ministry, Teaching, Exhortation, Giving, Leadership and Showing Mercy.
Paul Mentioned 9 Spiritual Gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10; which are, Word of Wisdom, Word of Knowledge, Faith, Gifts of Healings, Working of Miracles, Prophecy, Discerning of spirits, Speaking in Tongues, and Interpretation of tongues.
Paul mentioned 8 Ministry Gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:28-30; which are, Apostles, Prophets, Teachers, Miracles, Gifts of Healings, Helps, and Administrations, Gifts of Varieties of Tongues.
What’s the difference between the 2 lists? Paul said, the first list of Gifts can manifest or come upon any believer as the Holy Spirit desires to use that believer (see 1 Cor. 12:11 NKJV). However, the second list of Gifts Paul says, Are all Apostles? Are all Prophets? Are all Teachers? And so on…(1 Corinthians 12:28-30 NKJV) Paul repeats the list by asking questions and leaves it up in the air for us to answer, No! The entire point Paul was trying to make is that there are Ministry Gifts that God appoints men and women to operate in consistently, and there are Spiritual Gifts that the Holy Spirit will bring about in the life of a believer to show them that they can be used just as well.
Paul Mentioned 5 more Gifts in Ephesians 4:11; which are, Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers.
We are told to Earnestly DESIRE THE BEST GIFTS! Which is the Best Gifts? The Best Gifts is the one that is truly needed where you are. If your Church lacks good teaching—then you obviously need a Teacher there that’s experienced and Anointed and Called by God to Teach the people attending your Church. The interesting thing is that you may be the one who recognizes the need and God may in fact stir your heart to want to be an effective Teacher and the more you begin to DESIRE that position, God will inspire you to PRAY about it and then before you realize it you might just find yourself Teaching people one-by-one then it will turn into a group setting as you learn, apply, and experience the things of God yourself—your passion to share it becomes increasingly real and helpful to those you Minister to.
Do you Desire people to be healed? Do you Desire people to be Baptized in the Holy Spirit? Do you Desire to be used in the Gifts of Healings and Miracles? Do you Desire to Prophesy? Lay hands on people? Serve as an Administrator, Door Keeper, Maintenance man, or an Audio/ Video Technician? Do you Desire to be an Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor, and Teacher?
God needs a lot of people operating in His kingdom. Don’t shy away from the Calling, don’t make excuses, and don’t be lazy. God needs you where you are and He will work in you to polish you up at the same-time He is using you to help His Church congregation grow and experience blessings. SO DESIRE SPIRITUAL GIFTS, PRAY ABOUT IT, AND EXPERIENCE THE BLESSING OF BEING USED BY GOD FOR HIS GLORY, Amen.
I recommend that you read any or all the articles about any Gifts that you believe God is calling you to operate in. I was lead to write many articles about different Gifts that God used me in. I cannot squeeze detail teaching about a particular Gift in this one article. However, my point of this article is to draw your interest about SPIRITUAL GIFTS and then allow the DESIRE and PRAYER TO MOVE YOU TO EXPERIENCE THE BLESSING OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS OPERATING IN YOUR LIFE. May God motivate you to Desire, Pray and Experience all He has for you in His Kingdom, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
