THE ABSENCE OF LOVE
Have you ever thought about how life would be without love? Do you think you would feel a lonesomeness that could not be endured? Just sit back for a moment and think about your family; what your life would be like if you did not have someone to love or someone to love you. Imagine that you had a mother and father who did not really love you. How would they treat you? Would they hug you? Would they be anxious to tell you about something that may have happened that would give you joy on hearing the news?
Would they try to help you with your school work? Would they try to listen to your problems? How would you talk to them about a problem you might have? What if you were hurt at school? Do you think they would try to help you recover from the incident? I wonder what it would be like without the ability to love. Without love in our lives, would we really want to live?
It would be frightening if we could not find someone who would be interested in helping us if we had an accident. Would we have hospitals to help us if love did not exist? Would we have nurses and doctors who would devote themselves to curing people of their illness, or accident- related illness, or just being sick with a cold? If you had a cold, would the pharmacies provide medicines that could help you? Would we even have pharmacies or hospitals? Think about it. There has to be reasons for us to have hospitals. We have to be concerned about people and their lives. But without love, would we be concerned about anyone?
Are you not glad that we do not have that worry? The worry that others are not concerned about others? Would it be better to just live our lives without concerning ourselves about others? I doubt that if we did not have love for one another that we would live very long. We would suffer without the help of another. If there were no love in the world, why would anyone care about how anyone would feel?
In the Bible, there is the story about a man who was hurt, lying by the road. People passed him by. They did not stop to help him. He lay there suffering because he was hurt. He lay there until someone came along and put him on his donkey and took him to a place where he could be helped. The man left him there and promised he would come back after his business was tended to. He left some money and said he would pay for any expenses when he came back.
Think of the love this man showed. Why did he take the time to help him and then promise to return? Was it because the man felt love for someone hurt? What about the others who had passed the hurt man by? Did they show any love? How would you feel if you had been that person who was hurt on the side of the road? Does it not make a difference in how you think or feel when you hear this story? Is it better to love and be loved than never to have love at all?
Without love, we wouldn’t have the love of our Creator. In fact, without love, I’m convinced we would never have been created, for it was because of love that we were.
