A Bed of Roses

“Beloved let us love one another for Love is of God.” 1 John 4:7

Life can literally be a bed of roses at times. There can be days, months and years of supreme bliss with no pain or trials. We are in the midst of such a month where love is glorified to the extreme and depicted as a bed of roses where dreams come true overnight. The sweet scent of roses has a permanent fragrance throughout this month and of course, those in love are hardly satisfied with just one day dedicated to cupid to express the depths of their feelings. In fact, they carve their own very day during the month which is exclusively their own to call and decreed as the day of love rather than have this day mingled along with the celebrations of the rest of the world.

If any heart wants life to be a forever state of bliss, a cakewalk then our life has to be built on the cornerstone of faith who is none other than Christ. Before any work is commenced, any success achieved, it is very important to call on the name of the Lord, to offer our prayers before his throne without which no victory can be amassed. Without his presence at our side, we will surely fail.

We read in the book of Tobit on how Sarah the daughter of Raquel was married seven times and how all her seven husbands died on the wedding night on account of a demon that would kill the men before Sarah could be with any of them. It was only when she marries Tobiah, the son of Tobit at the bequest of the Angel Raphael that Sarah and Tobiah decide to pray to the Lord first on their wedding night before commencing a wedded life together. This helps to save the life of Tobiah and the couple and their parents praise and glorify God the next morning. Without inviting the Lord to be the master of their new life together, they could never have availed of His merciful blessings in sparing Tobiah’s life and getting rid of the demon forever. Their marriage thus turned into a bed of roses forever filled with the fragrance of heavenly love.

God sends down daily his carpeted roses filled with the fragrance of his love straight down from Heaven. We fail to pick up many of these roses because we do not recognize his love, at times we are so caught up in our grief and troubles that we do not pick up the roses that are strewn within our reach. Still sometimes we cannot believe that God has blessed us with so many favors that we miss out on the fragrance of joyful times.

At other times, the same roses being sent our way are the roses of His agony which he shares with us in the hope that we will embrace these roses into the fragrance of our own pain and suffering. We can thus bloom together with our Lord in those painful times knowing that soon, he will turn these moments too from the garden of agony into an Eden of joy.

In life, we follow at times a straight path of roses adorned all the way, we literally sleep on a bed of roses. Until, one day to our disdain, the same path turns thorny and we find ourselves standing far away from a path where only roses blossomed. We long to tread back on the rosy path and realize that the thorns stand between this path and us. We have to first walk on the thorns in order to reach back into the scent of beautiful roses once known and lose ourselves once again in the petals of its colorful and vibrant hug.

We all know that suffering is a thorny path but the Lord will not allow us to walk on this path for long, He will neither permit our feet to be bruised nor will he allow our hearts to bleed forever. He will carry us over the thorns and lay us down in the garden of roses where the warmth of His healing touch will outshine even the sun shining over the garden. He will turn the thorn spread into the spread of roses to the delight of our eyes and heart.

In this month, where Roses is the most talked about, love depicted, sold over and shared among lovers flower, let us remember that life definitely can be a bed of roses every other day and night when we allow these same roses to adorn us with the fervor of God’s love where we can breathe of its exotic perfume right through eternity.
