Do We Seek Great Things For Ourselves?

“'And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I will bring adversity on all flesh,' says the Lord. 'But I will give your life to you as a prize in all places, wherever you go.'” ~ Jeremiah 45:5

Baruch must have been in a place of self-seeking pride, as if to say, "What do I get out of this?" He was more than Jeremiah's partner and recorder. He was, and is, a representation of greedy man.

God loves us but He does not need us. We have needs, and He is the best to fulfill them, but if He had need He would not be God. He would be a man. The True Giver can have no need, being the Source of all that is good.

He loves us and will take us if we come to Him on His terms, not with our own. He would have the right to deride us if we came with our own terms. His terms for us is actually only one term: surrender to His Son.

Then we will have Him. He gets us. Who ended up with the shorter end of the stick?

Grace is gracious except for the One extending it.

He is too rich to make us pay; we are too poor to buy.

When will we see He is our best, greatest and only benefit having been saved by Him. We would be right to surrender to Him to be His slave. Instead He makes us friends with Him; friends who partake in His secrets. Like James, Peter and John we become part of His inner circle. We are the servant who sees Him turn water into wine.

Do you look at the Bible the same way you look at a benefit package? Are you looking for what you are entitled? Here’s the benefit of being a follower of Christ: you are saved by God through His Son’s work. After that it is cake icing. If you are healthy with food in your gut, praise the Lord. If you are homeless and starving, praise God as well, if you are His.

Earth is different for the saved and unsaved. For the saved it is the closest we get to Hell.

For the unsaved it is the closest they get to Heaven.

Note to reader: This is the result of meditating on this verse the day I posted it here.
