Oil Of Myrrh - Matthew 2:11 (Wise Men Seek Him, 7)
“And when they had opened their treasures, they presented to Him gold, frankincense and myrrh.”
Similar to frankincense, the oil of Myrrh is an aromatic gum obtained from the bark of a tree. It was used to make perfume but also used to embalm the dead (John 19:30), so in contrast to the sweetness of Frankincense, myrrh represents the bitterness of the cross and the suffering of Jesus. When it was given to the baby Jesus, it was a prophetic statement of His sacrificial death as Savior of the world. For us today, myrrh represents the laid down life, the life of the cross. It is also symbolic of the bitter issues which seem to be a part of life on this earth, like infirmity, the pain of parting, and the loss of a loved one. There may be many difficulties that arise in life, but the cross gives us victory. Jesus overcame every problem that could ever arise in our lives and He gave us the power to do the same. The past year may have had many challenges but you overcame, and made it into another year. You have come through into a stronger place!
This message is called the “Oil of Myrrh” because there is an anointing that seems to be released when we have been through a difficult place. God does not give His kids the painful things they sometimes have to deal with, but when challenges arise, He gives us the opportunity to trust in Him, to stand on His promises, and to go on to higher ground. Just like the gum of the myrrh tree, which is crushed to create a strong fragrance, the faith filled believer comes through times of tribulation smelling more like Jesus and less like the world! “The Kingdom suffers violence but the violent take it by force” (Matthew 11:12). When you press in to God’s heart in the face of a difficulty, it positions you for promotion. When the enemy throws problems our way, he is setting us up for more of the anointing and for greater levels of power, hallelujah! There is a fragrance which is carried by the one who fought a battle and won. It is the oil of myrrh!
Myrrh was also used in medicine and is still an ingredient in many Chinese remedies today. You too can be the healing balm of myrrh to someone in need. When you come through the fire and the flood, you are equipped to strengthen others and help them overcome the same challenges. You become a releaser of the healing power of the Holy Spirit. Nothing you face in life is ever in vain!
Friend, God knows about all the challenges that could potentially arise in your life in the coming months but He has made it possible for you to overcome. Let me encourage you to stand strong and keep your eyes on Jesus this year, no matter what. Abba only has good plans for you and wants to take you to higher ground. Even when the enemy may try to derail you, if you choose to believe God and flow with His plan for you, you are heading for higher ground. God wants you to press in for His best. He has a sweet anointing especially for you!
The combination of gold, frankincense and myrrh is powerful and significant for the new year. It is God’s call to His born again children to lay down their lives to Him in sweet surrender, to seek Him through real Holy Spirit led worship, and to walk in the revelation that Jesus already paid it all. Believe that this year is going to be fruitful and one of progress. Believe that God wants to take you to higher ground and from strength to strength. Believe that even if problems arise, no weapon formed against you will prosper and nothing the enemy throws at you will knock you out. You are Abba’s favorite and His very special child! Just believe!
“Abba Lord, I pray for the precious person reading this message. I ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to be his/her portion today and each day through this year. May this year be filled with your transforming power and your overflowing love. Let the oil of your sweet anointing flow into his/her life. We yield our ‘all’ to you and ask for strength and victory every day, in Jesus’ mighty name, amen.”
