The Power of Replacement

While some things can be replaced, others can’t.

“I suggest you get replacement value insurance on your household items.” It was a suggestion from our insurance agent. My wife and I owned quite a few antiques. No more were being produced. And some perhaps were one of a kind. And while this type of insurance wouldn’t solve that problem, it would give us sufficient reimbursement to purchase another similar piece. We took his advice.

Paul offers another type of replacement that touches more important areas than furniture and nick knacks. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (Philippians 4:8 NLT)

If something happens that requires I use my insurance, I must first diagnose what needs replacing and provide proof it was stolen, lost, or destroyed. The same is true with my words and actions. I won’t replace what I don’t see in need of replacing.

Perceiving the need to replace words and actions that don’t fit God’s plan is also essential. I may realize I have unseemly characteristics, but if I don’t recognize their opposition to God’s character, I’ll continue clutching them.

To receive reimbursement, I must send my agent information about the damaged or stolen goods. Replacing seedy thoughts and actions takes effort. Some people make being kind difficult. And immoral actions are often more tempting than godly ones.

But when I finally receive the money for the stolen or damaged item, joy sweeps over me. I can now replace what I lost. And the same holds true when I let God replace actions and attitudes he deems unwise or sinful for me as his child. At that moment, I’ll experience the abundant life he desires I have.

What habits or actions do you need to replace?

Prayer: Give us courage, O Father, to replace those thoughts, words, and actions that don’t accurately reflect the new nature You’ve given us. www.lovelinesfromgod.com
