Proverbs Chapter 3 Bible Study

This study continues our study in the Book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 3:1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

God wants us to love Him by loving (and obeying) His commandments. We must love God with our whole heart, soul and mind (Exodus 20:5-6; John 15:10-15; Matthew 22:37-40).

Proverbs 3:2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

Obeying God's commandments will add longer days, longer life and peace to our lives.

Proverbs 3:3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

Loving (obeying) God's commandments will bind mercy and truth to our necklace like a necklace.

Proverbs 3:4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

When we obey God's commandments we will manifest mercy and truth. This will lead to God and man showing us favor and good understanding.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Proverbs 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

We can not serve God half heartedly. We must serve God with our whole (entire) heart. We must avoid learning on anyone else's understanding.

Jesus gives all His servants the Holy Spirit to teach them. It is this Holy Spirit Which directs God's servants' paths (John 14:16-17; John 15:26; 1 Peter 1:20-21; Acts 2:1-30).

Proverbs 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

We've learned what "evil" was in our Proverbs Chapter 1 and 2 studies.

A person who practices evil isnot wise. In many instances time will reveal the foolishness of their error.

Proverbs 3:8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Obeying God's commandments will keep one healthy.

Proverbs 3:9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

Whatever we do we should Honor the Lord.

Whenever we have increasure we should honor God with our firstfruits

Proverbs 3:10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

When we honor God is such a way He promises to abundantly bless us.

Noone Of God's Children Will Avoid His Chastening

Proverbs 3:11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: Proverbs 3:12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

God will discipline His children. God's discipline proves that He loves His children.

The Beauty Of Wisdom

Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. Proverbs 3:14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. Proverbs 3:15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

One must obtain understanding with wisdom. The Bible defines this process as "merchandise" (silver and gold)". Wisdom is beautiful to God.

Proverbs 3:16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Proverbs 3:17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. Proverbs 3:18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

Everything about Wisdom is beautiful!

God's Wisdom will lead to peace and pleasantness.

God's Tree Of Life will be awarded to those who retain wisdom.

When God's Wisdom Founded The Earth

Proverbs 3:19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. Proverbs 3:20 By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

To learn more about God's Wisdom founding the earth and depths read Proverbs Chapter 8.

Proverbs 3:21 My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: Proverbs 3:22 So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. Proverbs 3:23 Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.

It is important that God's servants cultivate discretion. We discussed discretion in our Proverbs Chapter 1 Study.

Wisdom and discretion will be life to one's soul and grace to one's neck.

Are noticing how Mercy, Grace and Truth are essential to God?

Proverbs 3:24 When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

When we honor God, seek His wisdom and discretion we will sleep unafraid and in sweetness.

Proverbs 3:25 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. Proverbs 3:26 For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

When we honor God, seek His wisdom and discretion God will protect us when He judges the wicked.

Yes! God will destroy the wicked! Praise God!

This destruction of the wicked will come suddenly (Proverbs 3:25).@

Pay What You Owe On Time (Love Thy Neighbor)

Proverbs 3:27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. Proverbs 3:28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.

Whether is it willful charity or something that is due God's Word advises us not to hold on to it. Don't say, "I'll take care of it tomorrow (or later)". The Bible commands that we take care of it that day.

Love Thy Neighbor

Proverbs 3:29 Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

God warns His servants not to scheme againts their neighbors. Our neighborhoods must be secure.

God Does Not Like Instigators

Proverbs 3:30 Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.

God commands His servants not to be "troublemakers". If we are known as being instigators then we are disobeying God.

Proverbs 3:31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.

God's servants must not be (or envy) oppressors. May we keep our minds, hearts and concentrations off oppressors.

Proverbs 3:32 For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.

We've explained the froward in our Proverb Chapter 1 study.

God keeps His servants in His secret place (Psalm 91:1-16).

Proverbs 3:33 The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.

It's very easy to think that God is blind to the wicked and oppressors. God makes it perfectly clear that such ones are cursed.

If you are Walking in God's Spirit you are Blessed. Don't listen to Satan's lies or your flesh. Learn to listen to God and His Word Which Is Spirit (John 4:24; John 6:63; John 3:16).

It Would Be Wise For You To Study "Haman".

Proverbs 3:34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. Proverbs 3:35 The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.

Haman thought he was smarter than God and God's people. Haman was a scorner. Read the Book of Esther to learn how God dwelt with this scorner.

God will give Grace and Glory to those who obey His commandments.

The Bible says that it is God Which gives Promotion (Psalm 75:6).

Disobedient "Fools" will only be promoted with shame (Revelation 17:10-17; Matthew 25:1-12; Matthew 7:13-29).

Praise God!
