"Our Father who is in heaven" (NASB)Matthew 6:9b

The Lordís Prayer has, as with many oft-repeated verses, somehow become common to us. We have allowed familiarity of rob us of the power found here. I find that the best-known verses are often the ones that we skim, or even skip, over versus actually reading and absorbing.

Several years ago, we were discussing The Lordís Prayer in my Sunday School class. I did not grow up in church and never read The Bible until I was in my forties, but I knew this passage. Nevertheless, knowing it in black and white is far different than knowing it in its power as the very words from the mouth of Almighty God. During this Sunday School study, I began to actually read and meditate on the meaning of these ordinary words.

There is nothing magical in the words themselves. Mechanically repeating them will never wield the power that Jesus intended - the power of the words to come alive in our spirit as we use them to honor and worship God saying and praying, with reverence and awe, ďOur Father who is in heavenĒ and allowing our hearts to realize and acknowledge that God is the Father who gave us life.

He made us out of dust and breathed His Spirit into us so that we became a living, breathing being. Without Him there is no life. He formed us in our motherís womb (Psalm 139:13) and has numbered all the day of our lives (Psalm 139:16). He gave His most treasured possession, His only Son, so that we might be redeemed, and regardless of how many times we gloss over this often stated fact, it still retains all of its power and majesty as the greatest sacrifice ever made. And He made it on our behalf.

Lord God, thank You for Your sacrifice, freely given so that we might have eternal life walking with You and talking with You face to face. What a privilege it is, and what a shame that we often miss the significance of the greatest relationship we will ever know, far above any earthly relationship we enjoy. Lead us into the knowledge of You Father God. Amen.

If you died today, are you absolutely certain that you would go to heaven? You can be! TRUST JESUS NOW
