Jesus Christ himself had a suicide occur in his intimate circle of friends and followers. Somehow the full weight of that had never registered with me before. He was God. Couldn't he have prevented that from happening, some will ask. For whatever reason, he didn't. He didn't over-ride the will of his disciple, who had also betrayed him. Furthermore, prophesy was involved at least in the betrayal that led to the suicide. But that didn't keep Jesus from agonizing over it, as so many have and do in increasing numbers with their own friends and family. He can relate to that specific agony more deeply than I realized; sympathetically AND empathetically.
