I like the Amplified Bible's rendering of 1 Corinthians 10 v.13 "--- God will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength but will provide a way of escape TO A LANDING PLACE that you be able to endure it." I think of a bird or a plane locked into a flight plan or pattern with no place to light down for rest or fuel, as energy and hope dwindles, and how desperate a situation that is, but lo and behold a way opens and a place is suddenly provided. What a relief that would be! And indeed what a relief it is! Our faithful God promises to provide such a place for us where we can be welcome, where we can be safe and secure amidst the fellowship of the saints when the pressures, and lurings and stirrings of daily life begin to bear down and in upon us. One of God's names is El Shaddai, also translated "Many- breasted one." My wife Leslyn was telling me what an classic picture of intimacy it is, the mother nursing the young life, that until only recently was nestled within her very body. Psychologists say we long unconsciously for a return to that warmth and security. Maybe so but what we are learning, though, is that is to be found by reaching forward and not backward. As we reach forward for that fellowship in the bosom of the Almighty, we are nourished securely on His breast, and we can rest there in that peaceful place like in no other. Clinging gently and being sustained but knowing that is His constant grip that keeps us there and not our own.
