“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (1 Peter 5:7 KJV)
Does that not seem a little reckless? A little irresponsible? To cast, throw, or otherwise put some distance between you and what you care about? The manager in each of us wants to bring that which we care about closer; not further away. We want to bring our cares with us when we visit Jesus so that He can add His power to the force necessary to deal with that which we care about so dearly. Do you think that it ever occurs to us that we are told to cast our cares not because the problem does not need resolved, but because there is a heart in need of surrender? Our heart!
The next verse does not seem to help much either as it begins with the words, “Be sober, be vigilant”. That is what we are trying to do! There is something really important here and the manager inside us cannot waste time messing around with putting distance between us and our cares. Much less leaving them at the feet of Jesus to be dealt with who knows when or if it will even be implemented as we envision it. That roaring lion, that the balance of this verse speaks of, becomes a little clearer right about now. Who is in danger of being devoured? What do you think that lion might sink his teeth into to hold us while he tenderizes us?
If the love of Jesus is endless, then might it be worth being reckless in handing over that which we really care about? Be careful what you hold onto. Learn what makes up real living and sustains eternal life. Watch as He takes what we have let go and transforms it into something beyond what we can conceptualize much less do. If what is handed over is transformed differently than expected, note what is different about it. What part of that difference is worth being devoured over? What part of that difference is worth acknowledging His intervention for? What part of that difference can you build even more trust in? There is a difference between casting your cares and abandoning your cares. Stick around. He may be calling us to prepare the hearts of others for what He has for them too.
“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:25-26 KJV)
