HAVING SUFFICIENCY IN ALL THINGS
God is an All-sufficient Creator, sufficient in making all things abound for His children and always at the help of those on their way to it.
The name “JEHOVAH JIREH” which in Hebrew is “YAHWEH YIREH” is a name given to God for His show of magnanimity towards His friend Abraham on Mount Moriah. “YAHWEH YIREH” means “The Lord our Provider” or “The Lord who provides”.
Let us take a brief study on the interesting incident that birthed the name – JEHOVAH JIREH.
Thousands of years ago, God called Abraham and gave him a very difficult task to prove his loyalty and Trust in Him. It happened after Abraham had just sworn an oath of maintaining peace with Abimelech the King of Gerah in the land of the Philistines. The Lord commanded Abraham to take up his only son whom he loved and sacrifice him on a particular mount that He would show him.(Note: Isaac was the only legitimate son recognized by God according to His Agenda for Abraham. Ishmael was only a result of Sarah’s impatience and Abraham’s wrong actions to lay with their maid Hagar an Egyptian girl.)
When he got to the place where God had directed him to, he built an altar before the Lord as it was the usual custom of performing sacrifices in those days. Moments after that, he tied up the son and laid him on the altar. Isaac was a young boy who was seemingly obedient and helpless concerning the order of his father. Now was the set time to prove his faith in God. The decision was a tough one, the atmosphere was clouded with sorrow, the emotions were strong but not in the form of getting in the way of this die-harded heart of Abraham. Just as he was about to slay the lad, a voice cried from Heaven and commanded Abraham to stop the act. It was the gracious voice of the loving Lord. He commanded Abraham to untie the boy and directed his eyes to a nearby bush where a ram had got stuck with its horns wolven to the thicket. Abraham used the ram instead and was joyful that God had spared the life of his son. Out of the joy in his heart he named the place “YAHWEH YIREH” meaning “The Lord who provides”.
It didn’t end there. When God saw the faith of this mortal being, He was compelled to swear by His name – the highest authority ever – that He was going to bless him and multiply his seed all over the earth. The rest was history.
One important lesson to note from this great scenario is that God will never test us beyond our capacity, He tests us to reward our act of obedience and sincere trust, love and dependency on Him. Every successful test produce a testimony that is undeniable.
Our God is an unlimited God with abundant and unlimited resources and yet He is limited by our act of self-intelligence and pride. God loves to provide not when there is a need but when the one in need approaches Him with a trusting, obedient and humble heart. His method of providing for His children varies as it depends on the nature of the need. Sometimes He uses individuals to help support and care for others and other times, the method changes.
To conclude with this; God has never change and is not promising to change as regarding the way He provides for His creation. Sometimes, God takes us through the wilderness experience to reveal our weaknesses, shortcoming and frailties and with great help – to trash them out. He helps us get ready for the things ahead and takes His time to prepare us for the wonderful thing that He has prepared for us – whether material or immaterial.
God’s provision always abound. He is YAHWEH YIREH – The Lord our Provider.
