Thought for Today: She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins. (NIV)
Christmas was drawing near and it would make the second year that my family had been without a Christmas tree. We had been without a Christmas tree because the year before we knew a family with small children that did not have one at all. They seemed very sad about it and my heart grew soft toward the situation. Therefore, I asked my husband a question.
"Can we give our tree to them?" I asked. We have more than what we need and it would mean the world to those children. He agreed to the idea. We decided that next year we would purchase another Christmas tree.
However, next year rolled around. This time we were the ones that did not have the money to purchase another tree. I sighed. I really love Christmas trees I told myself.
I decided to quit feeling sorry for myself and go through my box of Christmas decorations in the hallway. I drug out piece by piece wondering how on earth I would be able to finish decorating without a tree? I suddenly stumbled across a manger scene nestled neatly in the box. In my heart, I knew this was the real meaning of Christmas. I lovingly set up the manger scene in our living room. I carefully placed our treetop angel on top of the inn. I then placed all our presents around the manger set aside a gift box especially for Jesus.
What are you giving to Jesus this Christmas, I asked my teenage daughters? I have already given Him part of my present. I just officially signed up for my trip to Honduras. I am going to go teach Vacation Bible School to four different orphanages this summer. I know you have something to give Him. Whatever it is… I want you to write it down, stick it in the basket, and really do it for Him. We need to bring gifts to Him this Christmas.
I truly felt a warmth in my heart. Instead of piling our
presents around the Christmas tree we were laying them around baby Jesus.
Maybe not having a Christmas tree is so bad after all, I thought?
I smiled as I looked at the tree top angel on top of the Inn. In my heart, this was the best Christmas tree ever!
PRAYER: Dear Lord, I am so thankful that this Christmas we are bringing our gifts to You! We are laying them around the manger just like the wise men did when they finally found You. Help us keep the Christ in Christmas all year long! Amen.
