“Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:4 NKJV)
God designed human life with a value. The value is that only a human life can bring glory to God. The prime area through which we can bring glory to God is by obeying the Bible. Here, we see a great command to be obeyed: Look for the interests of others also. In this busy world, who has the time for looking for others’ interests? What will we lose if we not do so? Friend, if we do not obey the Bible, we have lost everything. So we must take time to develop mutual understanding. Understanding each others’ interests will bring a great reformation in the Christian community. The reason is that through obeying Philippians 2:4, we get a clean mindset about the fellow-believers around us. How can we understand each other without knowing each others’ interests? So it is a basic responsibility for each one of us to care for each others’ interests and thus develop unity in the Church.
How can we look out for the interests of others? Many of us are pliable to people whose interests match with ours. How easily do we get influenced by them! But, we must know, through this verse, that we must respect even those interests which we do not like. For example, if a person aspires to climb a mountain, I must not interfere with his aspiration in an opposing manner, even though I may fear that it requires lots of practice and courage. Many courageous attempts are avoided due to discouraging words like: Do not attempt, it’s dangerous! etc. I am not promoting stunts here, but just want to say, if someone wants to do some brave act, let us allow him if we are sure he has gained the capability through rigorous training. Next example, if someone wants to buy a joke book, we should not say that reading jokes is a waste of time even if we may not have interest in jokes. In fact, the truth is, reading good jokes can make one be relieved, for some instant. The ability to look out for others’ interests is a gift from God.
So, how is your life today? Do you have the time and willingness to have concern for the interests of others? If so, I assure, God will use you mightily for the blessings of all those around you. If we have an unselfish nature and try to correlate with each other by having a clean mindset about each others’ desires and interests, we, Christians, can show to the world what unity really means. We thus can be perfect representatives of God’s plan and purpose behind designing human life. It was designed in such a way that people have the ability to be concerned for each other. But, sad news, most of us are concerned only for ourselves. It is time now for all of us to change our attitude about life. Do not just strive and thrive personally, but encourage others’ interests so that they can get the necessary prompting to do all the good they can and thrive in life. Leading a life as this is very much needed in pleasing God and to bring glory to His name.
Have you ever wondered what can inspire us to have such an attitude? If we think in depth about the welfare of society, for the success of others, for God’s purpose for each one to be accomplished, if only we take a little time to consider this, we can get the prompting from God to obey Philippians 2:4. Let us never stop others from doing the good they like, no matter how much far our mindset be from theirs. Remember, we have a responsible life on earth, a life that must contain the value described in this article.
