Pamela’s prayer time today was heavenly. She cried, she wept on her face before God. Everything felt so beautiful. God must have heard every single word she uttered. She felt so relieved, she felt so refreshed…
Her phone beeped. An sms.
‘You mean the world to me. My jewel of inestimable value’
Ah, marriage was heavenly. Her husband was the best. The bestest. It was texts like these and ‘dates’ with him like Friday night’s that made the world go round. She would never trade him for any other man.
Basking in the euphoria of the weekend, she hummed all the way on the train to work. Life was good, things were looking up.
Nothing unusual happened. A relatively quiet day. She sat at her desk wishing something, anything exciting would happen.
The recruitment agency sent a mail to her. She hadn’t been selected for the position. What? After the rigorous exercise? She had gone through 3 competitive assessments, not to mention the 2 interview sessions, the last with the Managing Director himself. Seriously? Life wasn’t fair. Why did things have to be tough like that?
A promotion list came out. All her colleagues had been promoted. All but her. She knew her onions and she wasn’t going to take that omission sitting down. She waited for the right opportunity that evening and asked her attending physician why. He had been as shocked as she was, insisting she was one of his finest and best staff. He promised to find out why.
It turned out her appraisal hadn’t got to the appropriate quarters early. And though she was still going to get promoted eventually, it was going to take a little while. Procedure had to be followed.
When she got home and moaned about how things had not worked out to Jerry. He listened to her quietly. But she wasn’t ‘feeling’ him. He appeared to be more interested in hearing the Senators’ arguments for and against a new bill to be passed than he was in hearing her moan about her career. That was the thing, she had always said it, ‘this man doesn’t understand me. He doesn’t love me, he doesn’t show me he cares. I don’t even know when last he acknowledged me’
Hectic week. She couldn’t wait for it to be over. Her prayers seemed to be hitting the ceiling today, bouncing off and landing right back beside her. Praying was so difficult. Especially, when she didn’t feel anything. How could she be so sure God was even listening to or hearing her? All these life’s pressures….
On and on she bobbed; up today, down tomorrow…. Feeling good today, feeling low tomorrow… Bobbing this way when certain things happened the way she wanted, and the other when other things happened…
Just like a pendulum.
That’s what feelings do. That’s how feelings are – Transient, Unstable.
Yet, what does He tell us? How does He expect us to live?
We are excited when we pray, not because we feel good about how we prayed but because we know we have a God who keeps His Word and does what He says regardless. He told us our confidence when we pray is in the fact that we prayed according to His will, not because we sweated this much, or cried that much, or felt goose bumps.
We don’t bob this way and that in our relationships. In our marriages for example, we stay committed because love isn’t just something you feel. Love is a commitment.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres…’ (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)
And so we choose to love, long after the ‘fuzzy woozy’ feelings in our stomachs have died out. We choose to love, love, love and stay ‘in love’ because good feelings at their best are not love. We put the others’ interests above ours. He wants to watch the premier league at a time we would rather be discussing our next vacation? Because we are not self-seeking, we wait…
We don’t bob forward and backward.
Our lives are governed by the Word. We know we have a better tomorrow because the Word says so, not because we have made all the calculations and feel good about the future.
We drop the feelings and stop vacillating. We walk to the switch and stop the roller coaster of feelings once and for all time.
We make up our minds to be people of the Word, not feelings.
And so, through the different phases of our lives. We smile. We smile not because we’ve got it all worked out in our heads or because we feel good. We smile because we’ve got to a point where we know who we are.
Like the songwriter says:
You know who God says you are
What He says you are
Where He says you are at
You know who you are
And feelings have absolutely nothing to do with it.
Sincerely, I am not sure where you are at in your life right now and what you feel like feeling about yourself.
Can I just remind you about a few things about you:
“All things are working out for your good…” (Romans 8:28)
And you know what I love about that scripture, ‘all things means ALL…’
I like to remind myself often that if God meant some, He would have said some… So, all includes that icky situation you are in right now.
Here’s another one:
‘God-loyal people don’t stay down long; soon they are up on their feet’ (Proverbs 24:16)
Brother, that’s not how the story is going to end. Sure, you may be down to your last cent, you may be down to your last drop of oil but His Word tells me you are going to be up on your feet… soon! Hahaha exciting!
‘See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!’ (1 John 3:1)
No matter how ‘worthless’ and unloved you feel. He loves you so very much.
I could go on and on…
It’s time for us to say no to these feelings that try to make us live beneath our real status.
It’s time to stop being infants tossed to and fro by feelings. It’s time for us to say, ‘Yes, I may not feel like it right now but the Lord is my shepherd! Therefore I want nothing good…’
It’s time for us to say, sure the doctors say this and my body feels that but His Word says this about me and that settles it…!
Get to the Word for yourself today. Stick with it regardless of how you feel because feelings pass but the Word stays the same always and has stayed same through the ages. It worked for Sarah, Abraham, Peter, Paul…. It definitely won’t stop working with you no matter how you f.e.e.l :)
