There is a story about Benjamin Franklin wanting the city of Philadelphia to adopt street lighting. No one, however, seemed interested. Mr. Franklin did not argue. He just lit a lantern every night on his porch. As his neighbors watched they started doing the same. Before long, the entire city was lit up, all because Benjamin Franklin showed, by example, the usefulness of light.
Light and truth are the same in the Bible. Matthew 5:14-16 provides a spiritual application of the Benjamin Franklin story. "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peckmeasure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
What if all Christians were "spiritual Ben Franklins?" Let's all be examples of holding the light of God's truth in obvious places where people will see the usefulness of spiritual truth. Maybe it will catch on one person at a time. People holding the banner high, and keeping the torch lit, for truth, are desperately needed today in our darkened culture. What can you do, no matter how small, to be a truth bearer?
