Chapter 3
On the Edge of Disaster
As for me, the following experience helped me to find out if someone was really watching. At five or six years of age, I was living with my mother and sister along Deanery Road in Vineyard Town, in Kingston, Jamaica. Our cousins, the Upfields, and ‘Aunt Stella,’ our maternal half–blind grandaunt, lived in the big upstairs house on the right of the premises. We occupied the small cottage on the left. Our mother was not yet divorced, but only separated, hardworking and struggling to provide for us.
Early one school day morning, as the sun shone brightly, my sister, Rosalie, and I hurried along with our mother down the long dirt road driveway to catch the bus. Mummy walked ahead of me while my sister, one year and three months younger, was holding her hand. When we passed the two white stone columns with its rusty iron gate and had entered the main road, my mother looked back at me, “Come along , Richard!” she called.
Suddenly, I ran past her and across the road. As she crossed with my sister and came upon the sidewalk, I ran merrily ahead of them on to the dirt path that led through buttercup sprinkled grass. The next moment, as I was about to step on to a live electrical wire, two strong arms grabbed me.
“Only God save the boy!” exclaimed the tall dark man, as he held me up in the air. My mother’s face must have turned pale white. In those days, people were sometimes electrocuted when the Light Company laid out live wires on the streets to correct electrical problems. Being saved from electrocution was the first miracle I can remember.
From then on, my mother drilled it into my head, “God has a special plan for you, Richard!” She often reminded me that when I was in the womb she would sometimes pray, “Lord, if this child is going to disgrace You, just take him out of this world!” A serious prayer, but I always felt a sense of divine destiny over my life.
When surrounded by enemies who viciously slandered him and plotted to kill him, King David once wrote, “You are my God. My times are in Your hand!”
I can remember sitting in a Sunday School class as a child, as we all clapped and pointing to our eyes we sang loudly and joyfully, “Watch your eyes, watch your eyes what they see, for there’s a father up above looking down in tender love! Watch your eyes, watch your eyes what they see!”
Is Someone bigger always watching us?
About to be electrocuted? Caught in the arms of an electric company worker, who happened to be looking my way? Mere coincidence? Don’t be so quick to chalk it all up to chance. Perhaps, you may be tempted to step back, scratch your head and say, “Pure luck!” But consider this! We often received toys at Christmas, and sometimes a box which we excitedly unwrapped on Christmas morning revealed a picture of a painting by a famous artist. In the box was a jig-saw puzzle. My sister and I would sit on the floor and try to fit pieces of the jig-saw puzzle together. Often it took a long time before the whole picture came together. Sometimes it was frustrating, but if we were patient, eventually we were thrilled when we saw that each piece had found its rightful place.
When Hagar was rejected by Sarah, pregnant and alone she fled to the desert. In the boiling heat of the sun, with sand on every side, her situation was indeed desperate! She had no-one to whom she could turn but God.
She must have thought to herself, “When my baby is born, how will I manage in this God-forsaken place?”
The only thing that could sustain her was a water fountain nearby. Suddenly the Lord found her and told her, “You shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael”
Later she recognized that God had appeared to her, and she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are the God Who sees!” The Hebrew words she used, ‘El Roi,’ refers to Jehovah as ‘the Lord Who sees.’
Often, after lights out, as I drew the covers over my shoulders, like an echo, that went through the house, I could hear my mother’s voice sighing that same prayer, “Thou God seest me!” (KJV). She seemed to have been aware of the God of Israel constantly watching everything in our lives.
Christ Himself taught that God knows all that we need before we even ask.
Can you imagine the scene where an assembly of angels in heaven is carrying out the orders of the King of the Universe? They are very busy recording the strands of hair on each person’s head? While one angel examines by heavenly satellite a young adult’s head, another at his desk with a spiritual calculator says, “One hundred thousand strands of hair on this young adult so far!” Another keeps calling out, “Perfect!” and you can hear the clicking of the heavenly calculator.
Another angel, examining the head of a blonde, calls out, “One hundred and thirty thousand so far...some ten thousand were destroyed by chemical dying!” Yet another shouts, “One hundred and eight thousand for this brunette!” And another calls out to the angelic registrar, “This redhead should have ninety thousand, but had chemotherapy. A lot fell out. She only has thirty thousand, but they will grow back. Make a note of it!”
Besides all that accurate accounting of hair, God sees when the smallest sparrow falls to the ground. Jesus once told His disciples, “Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows!”
All praise and glory, therefore, must go to the One Who is constantly watching over us!
