Mark 4: 24
And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
Often when we read a scripture, we become focused on finding its deeper meaning. There may, however, be a more subtle message right in front of our eyes. For instance, in the verse above, Jesus instructs that we are to be mindful about the measure that we hear things. In other words, when we first hear Godís word, we should allow time for our hearts to digest it. We should reflect and meditate on what we have heard and ask the Holy Spirit what it means for our life. This is important because so many other words can come in and distract us in the moments following a message. I believe that Jesus is showing us that the measure that we receive the word into our hearts is directly related to the reverence we give the word whenever we hear it spoken. We show God that we truly honor his word when we make take the time to gain understanding whenever we hear it. Jesus promises that when we do this, we will not only reap a harvest from that word, but God will continue to reveal himself to us by sending more word for us to plant in our hearts.
Thought for the day: How can I minimize distraction so that I will have more time to study Godís word?
