 King Belshazzar's Feast - Rembrant

Daniel chapter 5

Belshazzar prepared a feast

A thousand lords, did bring

Into the royal palaces

To sit before the king

The vessels from God's house, he brought

And filled with finest wine

His princes too, this evil wrought

His wives and concubines

Against the only, one true God

In bold defiance stood

And praised the gods of silver, gold

Brass, iron, stone and wood

In that same hour, upon the wall

Against the candle-stand

To the astonishment of all

The fingers of a hand

Upon the plaster, did appear

Inscribing words, most strange

Thus Belshazzar, was struck with fear

His kingly visage, changed

Bring in the wise astrologers

They heard his frantic cries

The Chaldeans, the soothsayers

The learned and the wise

Whoever can this thing explain

A ruler, shall be made

Around his neck, a golden chain

In scarlet robes, arrayed

Alas they could not understand

The writing on the wall

The king was greatly troubled and

His lords astonished, all

Into the palace came the queen

She spake, long live the king

Let not thy countenance be changed

Thy thoughts, thee trouble bring

There is a man, from days of old

Who out of Jewry, came

Belteshazzar, thy father called

But Daniel, is his name

Hard sentences, he can dispel

Strange dreams, can understand

Send thou for him and he shall tell

The meaning of this hand

Then Daniel stood before the king

Who asked him, art thou he

From Judah did my father bring

Thee in captivity?

I've heard that thou dost walk aright

In knowledge, to be wise

In whom the spirit dwells, and light

Of understanding, lies

The wise men and astrologers

That stood before my throne

Could not divulge the meaning of

Nor make this writing, known

But Daniel, I have heard of thee

Thou canst all doubts dissolve

If thou wilt shew this thing to me

The mystery resolve

A robe of scarlet, shall be thine

A chain of finest gold

I will my kingdom, thee assign

As ruler, most extolled

Then Daniel said unto the king

Keep thou thy great reward

I will reveal to thee this thing

Interpret thee, each word

Thy father blessed with power and might

In awesome majesty

Was lifted up in sinful pride

A hardened heart, had he

The nations trembled at his name

He acted as he chose

Until the very God of heaven

His royal throne, deposed

With beast-like heart, he fed on grass

Moist with the morning dew

Among the oxen and the ass

Until he truly knew

That the Most High, didst reign and rule

This kingdom made of men

Exalting some and by his will

Debasing them, again

But thou his son, oh Belshazzar

With prideful heart and mirth

Hast lifted up thyself against

The Lord of heaven and earth

The sacred vessels from His house

Thou didst replete with wine

For thee, thy princes and thy lords

Thy wives and concubines

The details of the days of old

Were told to thee and known

Yet thou hast praised the gods of silver

Iron, wood and stone

Which neither see, nor understand

And in thy heart of pride

The one who holds thy breath, in hand

Thou hast not glorified

This is the writing on the wall

The meaning is quite plain

Thy kingdom God shall cause to fall

Another, it shall gain

The balances are weighed, O King

And wanting, by decree

Between the Persians and the Medes

Thy realm, shall portioned be

In that same night, was Belshazzar

King of Chaldea, slain

And as a pauper, left this earth

Despite great wealth and gain

This week I determined to retire my pen but before doing so, wanted to write about this painting. I always knew I would.

I feel inadequate and under qualified to handle God's word. Should I ever start 'that website' I will post details here, however I need to know that it is God's will and I simply don't. I do believe that God's will is perfect and knowable but I have much to work through.

So I leave you with an epic, not so well-written, poetic narrative of sorts, inspired by the wonderfully talented Rembrant.

Melody, Pauline, Margaret, I will always be thankful your love and encouragement and will keep in touch. I look forward to reading and learning from more of your work.

I will wait till you are ready. I feel the cry of your heart is for God and he will answer you, always in His time, but we have a promise, though we have to wait, sometimes a very long time to see the answer...seek and you WILL find, Knock and the door will be opened, keep seeking for the God of all has made you a promise, and He will keep it. There have been years of darkness in my walk with God, but wonderful things also, Don't ever give up...from Glory to Glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
