Overwhelmed in Times of Trials and Testing

In times of trials and testing it is easy to become overwhelmed with layer upon layer of anxiety, worry, fear, and frustration. I recently went through a time when I not only felt frustrated but also fearful for my personal safety. God through His grace, however, brought several Bible passages to mind that helped me stay focused on his power, grace, protection, and peace. I would like to share those with you, in case you are going through similar circumstances.

The feeling of being overwhelmed with circumstances can be surpassed with the character of God. Romans 8:35-39 is a reminder that nothing will separate us from the love of God. We can also "overwhelmingly conquer." (verse 37) Ephesians 1:19 tells us that we can experience the "surpassing greatness of His power". The "surpassing riches of His grace" is mentioned in Ephesians 2:7, and the love of Christ, which "surpasses knowledge" is spoken of in Ephesians 3:19. We can also experience the peace of God which "surpasses all comprehension." (Philippians 4:6-8) I John 3:1 says that God has lavished His love upon us. All of this surpasses any circumstance of trial or testing.

On top of all of this we can have GPS: GOD'S PROTECTIVE SURVEILLANCE. Check out the following passages of Scripture:

Psalm 5:12 says that God surrounds us "with favor as with a shield."

Psalm 68: 20 tells us that "God is to us a God of deliverances; and to God the Lord belongs escape from death." How many times have you and I been saved from potentially harmful and dangerous situations? We probably don't even know.

Psalm 34:7 is a powerful statement of God's protection. "The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them."

Psalm 41:1-2 has a promise for those who consider the helpless. "How blessed is he who considers the helpless; The Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble. The Lord will protect him, and keep him alive..."

II Thessalonians 3:3 has this to say. "But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one."

May you find these to be great verses to meditate upon in times of testing and in uncomfortable or potentially harmful situations. In summary, the real purpose of testing is clearly stated in Deuteronomy 13:3-4. "...for the Lord your God is testing you to find out if you love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all of your soul. You shall follow the Lord your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him." So the real question in adversity is, are we allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed more with the circumstances, or with God's character?
