A life of Purpose

Deuteronomy 6:4-6

Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all of your strength.
These commandments that I give you today are
to be upon your hearts.

Many of us ask ourselves the question why are we here? Or better yet, what is Godís will and purpose for my life? And many times it takes some of us near a lifetime to answer that question. But if we look at Godís Word, we will see that He has already provided that answer. God created us each individually with a purpose in mind, one that He has specifically designed for each one of us. Just as each one of us is a story that needs to be told, we too each have our own individual gifts, abilities, passions as well as purpose for our lives.

As we see here in Deuteronomy 6:4-6, our first purpose is to worship God not only on Sunday morning Worship services, but we are to worship God with everything we haveóevery day of our lives. We are to love God with all of our heart, which means that we should not have anything before God in our hearts. Many times we put idols in our lives that distract us from living the Holy and pure lives that God had intended for us. Above all else we are to live for and love God first in our hearts before any possessions we might have, anything we may accomplish in life or relationships that we might have. Throughout scripture we see that every time man built or worshiped idols it fueled the anger of God. Why is that? Because when we allow idols to invade our hearts and put them before God what we do not realize is that it is separating us from Him. It takes us away from the Father rather than drawing us closer to Him. The Lord desires nothing but to come closer to us but the only way that He is able to do that is to have those idols removed from our lives. We need to be living a life of seeking after the heart of God, learning how to live Holy and pure lives as He intended us to.

What the Lord is showing us is that this is not merely a suggested lifestyle, this is not something we need to think on, but this is a commandment. A commandment that comes with an expectation of obedience. Our purpose for our lives is not to merely to inhabit time on earth but we are built to worship God. And God commands us to love Him with everything that we are and have because that is how He created us. Godís greatest hearts desire for us is to fulfill what He first created us to do. He created each one of us with a purpose, a purpose to impact lives while here on Earth. Not to merely inhabit the Earth but to impact those God puts in our lives. It is not by accident we are here right now at this time, it was what God originally intended for us, so that HE could speak through our lives.

This commandment was so important that even Christ addressed this in his teachings. As we see in Mark 12:28-30,One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.Ē As Jesus shows us here there is nothing more important than living and loving God with all of your life, not just some of it. God is not asking for part time Christians who live for Him one day out of the week. What He is telling us is that He needs those who are totally devoted and sold out for Him.

So I encourage and challenge you, to live out your life for Christ. Be obedient to what He has commanded us and has intended for us all along. To worship God with your life, with your mind, your heart and all of your strength for that is when we will truly be blessed by the Father. That is when we will fulfill His purpose for our lives. Living for God and loving God with everything that we have.
