One of the most prevailing truth throughout the scriptures, is also the one truth least believed and embraced. It is the truth that I am special. It is shocking to hear the many who do not believe that they are special. See especially Psalm 139,
I deliberately chose the singular pronoun, 'I' as opposed to 'we' because being special is a personal truth.
This is an exploration of what it means to be special.
To be a favourite is different than to be special, favouritism often divides and is not a good thing. To be special, there must be something that sets you apart.
Having a birthday is a good example of the usage of special. Your birthday is a special day where you are the celebrated one. It becomes a special day where friends and family set you apart. The reason you are being celebrated is not because you are more favoured than others but it's your birthday.
Being special is always a personal, relational matter, it involves you and no one else. A parent may have two children and both are special, but being special is still an individual matter.
As human beings, we are special but there are few that believe it. We all have eyes, ears, emotions, awareness and so on. What then makes us special? Special is a relative term.
Our individuality makes us special! When God created us and formed us in our mother's womb, before our grand entry into this world, as part of the fabric of our being, He added a special touch, which often was not visible until a number of years into our life. That special touch is called our birthright. It is something that belongs to us since we are born. This birthright consist of unique abilities, passions and relational gifts.
The intent of the birthright is to bring joy and blessing to yourself and others, hence it is meant to be relational. The greatest delight of a father who gives his young child a bicycle is to see him ride that bicycle. The greatest delight of a mother who gives her little girl a doll, is to see her play with it. So it is with our Heavenly Father; He delights to see us living, working, playing joyfully and prosperously from that special touch He added as He created us; the birthright, which is also referred to as our 'calling in life'.
A fallen world and an enemy seeking to destroy us as an undue avenge to our Maker, often prevents us from living from our birthright and even from recognizing our unique gifts and abilities, which is truly a sad thing. There is a saying that much talent lies in the grave.
I personally also believe that our life dreams are a part of that birthright, though never apart from God's intended purpose of joy and blessing.
When we truly embrace the truth that 'I am special', we gratefully 'open the gifts of our birthright' as it were and we begin to play, work, practise, etc. with the gifts and we become a blessing and are blessed by them. The best part is that Father will teach us to develop and use them so we may reach our full potential.
