25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
To all my brothers in Christ,
Do men have to be told to love their wives? As I examined this familiar passage of text the question arises...why is it necessary to tell husbands to love their wives or is this text telling husbands HOW to love their wives? I am of the opinion that it is not necessary to tell husbands to love their wives but it is necessary to tell husbands how to love their wives. Men in general find it difficult to commit but once they have committed themselves to"anything", they are all in and especially in the case of marriage. I am not referring to those men who marry women as a means to be provided for, or those men whom their wives have proposed to them and he said yes. A man who finds a woman and desires to be with her for a lifetime does not need to be told to love his wife because you can believe he already loves her but he does need instructions on how to love her. Hence, the scripture states husband love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her. In verse 28 it states," So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself." Therefore, the scripture teaches how husbands should love their wives, as Christ loved the church which is a love that is sacrificial. Christ gave his life for the church thus a husband ought to give his life for his wife. Does that mean he has to die on a physical cross? No, not necessary but it does mean he must die to himself by putting a priority on the needs of his wife instead of himself. This does not mean that husbands should not care for themselves but it does mean that loving your wife should be an expression of how much you love yourselves. The scripture declares that," For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church." In conclusion, the only way men will be able to love their wives correctly is that they be able to identify with how Christ's love the church and then be able to emulate and demonstrate that love to their wives.
