Love Discovered Anew

Consider those whom love has lost,
Who have spent the core of their life
In loving deeply no matter the cost,
Through years and tears, and strife.

Unnoticed, invisible, with none nearby
To heal their wounds sometimes deep,
They weep alone, and too often cry
While awake as well as in sleep.

Day after day, time without end,
They hope for someone to care.
Seems there's never really a chance to mend.
Life's a journey with no one to share?

Life was meant to be enjoyed, I'm sure,
Not alone, but in concert, you see.
So give thanks for the loved ones who make life pure
And would you say a prayer for me?

Months go by and it seems to me
My curriculum remains the same
Teaching kids life's values to see,
"Life's not about fortune or fame."

"Embrace the most important of codes:
Honor, coupled with care".
I taught them all in various modes,
"This, above all, you should share."

By end of school terms I was amazed to see
Their expressions for what they learned:
Students sending notes of "Thanks!" to me,
And prayers I had not earned.

You answered my desperate plea for a prayer!
Thank you for your notes of hope.
Just when I'd reached a point of despair,
When it felt so hard to cope.

If one might care then so may another.
My spirit is willing to soar.
As I look around, I see love here and there,
And I'm not alone any more.

The faith of one is strong indeed,
Some say it moves mountains to the sea.
But the prayer of just one is a powerful seed...
Look what it's doing for me.

Now filled with joy without measure,
Love with no strings attached.
Like finding long-lost buried treasure.
Genuine love that's unmatched.

Now I embrace a love never known
At least not by me until now.
Planting seeds that have never been sown
I never really knew how.

So forgive me, Lord, and forgive me again
For fretting all those years.
And wasting too much time in pain,
And crying too many tears.

A new abundant life awaits
To love and serve "for free".
Whatever time remains in life
Is for my expanding family.
