The Rickety Fence
“I’m a Christian!!“ I have always called myself a ‘Christian’, but looking back, I was doing just that, CALLING myself a Christian instead of living as one. I went to church now and then, I prayed when I needed something from God that I couldn’t fix, I even read the Bible here and there. Yep! I was a Christian, right? I mean, isn’t that all we need to do is just say it and do a few things God asks of us? God is about love and Jesus died for us so we He apparently loves us unconditionally, so, what could it hurt to enjoy life and have a little fun with things even if the Bible says they are sins, right? I can just tell God I’m sorry for doing things that displeases Him and move right along with life, couldn’t I? Besides, no one is perfect, so God will let my little sins slide by, won’t He?
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit” -Romans 8:5
Flesh: skin, food, meat, relatives, humankind; and the sin-nature of mankind
Spirit: wind, breath, conscience, ghost
As humans, we have both of these. We have the flesh that covers our skeleton, muscles, and organs, and, we have a spirit within us that makes us who we really are. Our spirit is the breath of God that gave us life. When we speak of “God”, we speak of the All in all, the One and only, the Creator of everything, God is the God of all and He was, is and always will be. And most importantly, God is a Spirit. He is in His own realm, in a Heavenly and Holy place that no human can even imagine.
This scripture above is pretty straight forward. Now that we know the meanings of flesh and spirit, we should understand that living for the things that our flesh want and desire are the opposite of living for things of the spirit. So what are things of the flesh? Anything that this world has to offer us is of the flesh. Anything that humans have to offer is of the flesh. The best way to put it is, anything that is not pleasing to God is of the flesh, and we can find what those things are in God‘s Word, The Bible. Why is that? Because the flesh only desires the things not pleasing to God, and the reason for that is that the flesh is the part of us that contains the sin-nature.
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” -Galatians 5:16-21
How much more clearer can God’s Word be than this passage in Galatians? It is telling us what not to do so that we can find a place in God’s kingdom. Sorry people, it’s absolutely not saying, “you can do these things once in a while and it will still be okay because God will still give you a place in His kingdom”, no way, no how is it saying that. Yet so many people live like that’s what it’s saying. Now, some new Christians and are working with the Holy Spirit to deliver them from these displeasing sins, but there are many, and I mean MANY, that know better and are not newborn Christians and have been given the knowledge of what is expected of us by God, and they still willingly continue in their iniquities. They stomp and yell that they can’t help it because they aren’t perfect and never will be. But guess what, God isn’t playing card games with our lives so your trump card is void and null with Him.
“If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.” -1 Corinthians 14:37-38
What does this passage mean? You have been given the knowledge and you have claimed The Word, so you are to live by it. But if you choose to ignore even a few things of The Word, you have willingly chosen to be ignorant as if you don’t know The Word, when you actually do know The Word. And don’t forget, God knows your true heart.
“Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” -Revelation 22:14-15
‘They that do his commandments…’ means exactly what it says, if we accept Christ as our Savior and we claim God as our Holy Father, we are to follow God’s commandments, not just one or two, it says ‘do his commandments’, meaning all of them which is following The Word, The Bible, which are the guidelines He gives us to live by. The Bible contains commandments throughout the whole book and they were put there for a reason by God, they were put there for us to live by and follow like our life depends on it, hmmmm, our lives DO depend on living for God or not!
So, what I am trying to say is, don’t live with one foot touching the world while you are God’s believer and servant. Get both feet on steady, firm and solid ground. You will never be able to steady yourself by standing on a thin fence that separates God and this world, no matter how hard you try, you will fall over and over. That fence is weak and brittle. That fence will break and fall away with you hanging on it. You must choose to live either on one side or the other. You cannot live on both sides, God will not stand for it.
“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” -Revelation 3:15-19
Don’t test God. He is just a little bit smarter than you are. He knows your thoughts before you even think them, so do you honestly believe He doesn’t see everything you are doing….come on, be real. We all know He sees and hears and knows ALL. No one will get away with anything that is unpleasing to God. So give yourself a break and stop teeter-tottering with the flesh and the spirit. It is exhausting!! Choose a side and stay there, but just remember, your choice will mean life or death. Yes, I am writing this in an abrasive way, but if I didn’t care about how your life ends up, then I would just write whatever made you feel good. But a ‘feel good’ message won’t show you the right path to travel on and I would be doing you an injustice by misleading you onto a wishy-washy path like that.
It’s time to make a serious choice. Do you keep doing the things that this world and risk a sentence of death in the final Judgment, or do you walk away from all the ‘fun’ and run toward eternal life and live forever in the kingdom of God?
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” -Romans 8:2
