Psalm 50:1-8, 22-23 – Burnt Offerings and Sacrifices
Key Verses: (NCV)
- 1: “The God of gods, the Lord, speaks. He calls the earth from the rising to the setting sun.” – God does not sit idly by, passively watching our lives progress. He calls each and every one of us to be with Him.
- 3: “Our God comes and He will not be silent.” – We may not take time to listen for Him in our busy lives but He is there actively speaking to all of us.
- 5: “He says, ‘gather around, you who worship me, who have made an agreement with me, using a sacrifice.’” – God gathers those who have not only committed themselves to Him but those who have kept those promises through sacrifice and dedication.
- 6: “God is judge, and even the skies say He is right.” – God watches everything we do in life and evaluates our love, commitment, and intent.
- 8: “I do not scold you for your sacrifices. You always bring me your burnt offerings.” – Bringing God the best our lives can offer as a sacrifice on His altar is what He expects and requires.
- 22: “Think about this, you who forget God. Otherwise, I will tear you apart, and no one will save you.” – Consider the ramifications when we decide to turn from God and follow our own path.
- 23: “Those people honor me who bring me offerings to show thanks. And I, God, will save those who do that.” – Worshipping and honoring God is the most important aspect in our relationship with God. Without it we are doomed.
- Do you hear God calling?
Promise of the Gospel:
God does not want half-hearted commitments from His people nor empty rituals or forgetfulness and He promises to sit in judgment for that purpose. To commit ourselves to God does not require the sacrifice of animals as it did at the time this psalm was written because Christ has become the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. However, that does not mean we can become lackadaisical and half-hearted in our commitments to Christ. God desires our heartfelt love, obedience, and praise. He wants every moment of our lives lived as a holy sacrifice to Him.
