Friends-we all cherish them. They are the ones we count on when all hell is breaking loose around us. We love the company and treasure the memories shared. We feel special and belonged in their midst and the best part; we feel loved.
And one thing we should all learn is that friendship is a give-and-take affair. You reap what you invest into your friendship. People love it when others pay attention to their needs but they are totally negligent to that of their friends. In their heads, everything should be about them. But in life, everything including balance requires balance. When one does not receive as much as one gives, it is only a matter of time when one becomes tired of losing more of himself to something or someone who isn't returning the favor.
We Christians love to call our Lord Jesus our Best Friend. He is the One we run to in times of trouble and His ears are always at our disposal to listen to all our grievances and needs. We turn on the praise mood when He answers our prayers and we go all worship-conscious when He marvels us in ways unimaginable.
But one thing I've come to learn is that, as much as our earthly alliances call for our loyalty; so does our friendship with Christ. He demands the same amount of attention He gives us and He cherishes the times we spend with Him. Remember He feels what we feel; joy, pain, rejection-whatever emotion our friends sometimes cause us to feel.
Take your time to reflect on this: can you call yourself a friend of Jesus? Whenever you spend time with Him, is it all about what you want or do you take the time to listen what He needs from you? Is His burden ours as well or do we just dump all of ours on Him to carry? Do you know His heart desire and are you ready to sacrifice to fulfill it?
We don’t make friends to keep ourselves happy but it is all about putting a smile on the face of others and making sure it stays there. Let’s stop being friends with benefits and focus on being selfless and more generous in our friendships.
And above all, let’s not forget to be more of a friend to our Lord Jesus than just someone we call on when we need Him to help us out.
