The fourth of July is a fun holiday. Barbecues, state fairs and fireworks; it's one of the highlights of the summer! I feel a strong sense of patriotism whenever I watch the fireworks display and I reflect on how blessed I am as an American. I take pride in knowing that our founding fathers fought so hard to establish a country whose values and laws were echoed in the words of the Bible and where all men could worship and practice their faith without any repercussions from the government and from those who enforced the law. Founded as a Christian nation, our fathers brought us into a special relationship and covenant with our Creator, and God blessed us tremendously for our obedience, much like the way He blessed ancient Israel for their keeping of His Law. However, as was the case with Israel, we as a nation have become severely backslidden and are drifting further and further away from God. As once stated by Abraham Lincoln during an address to the nation, in which he declared a national day of prayer and fasting, we have "forgotten our Maker." But we haven't only forgotten God, we are demanding that God has no place in our schools, our government, our public buildings, and even in our Laws. A nation that was once governed by those who upheld the Word of God and was guided by its principles has become a nation that is guided, not by the Bible,, but by political correctness and severe compromise. Because of this, we are losing the very freedoms that make this country so great and that our forefathers fought so valiantly to give us! We have become a country that tolerates and even celebrates actions and attitudes that God clearly spells out in His Word as being wrong and sinful and that separate us from Him. We demand that God mind His own business and keep out of our every day affairs and yet we wonder where He was on 9/11, or during Hurricane Katrina. We demand that God stay out of our schools and our home life, and yet we wonder why our kids are joining gangs, bringing guns to school, and why our kids are so angry and confused and that events such as the Colombine school shootings occur, among others. Did God cause these things to happen? Most definitely not! But I can't help to think that maybe God has taken a step back and is taking some of His protection away. After all, we have declared that God has no place in the affairs of our country, whether in public or even in private, and since God does not force Himself on anyone, He has politely stepped out of the picture and given us what we want. But there is still hope. God is calling this nation to repent of our backsliding and turn back to Him. He is full of mercy and love and will forgive us abundantly if we confess the fact that we, as a nation have turned our backs on Him, are turning our backs on Israel, and that we have broken the covenant with Him that our founders fought so hard to keep. May God forgive us and continue to bless this country, and may our leaders and peoples seek His face once again, for all who seek shall surely find, and our very existence as a great nation may depend on it!!!
