"Congratulation, ma'am." said the doctor to my mother.
"Er, thank you." my mother replied with uncertainty. Her uncertainty did not come as a result of unwanted news but a manner of uneasiness. Sure, she was surprised and even grateful to have a 5th pregnancy but did she really want this one? That was the real question. God (even though she didn't know Him at that time) was good to her. After the pre-mature death of her firstborn, her 3 other sons were all healthy and strong. But again, that was the dilemma.
Walking out of the clinic and driving home, my mother's thoughts were filled with vast emotions of anxiousness, joy and worry all at the same time as only a mother can have. What if it's another boy? I really want a girl. Oh, it was just an accident. We don't really want it. How can I be sure that it's not going to die on me or turn out to be a boy? Maybe I should get an abortion. After all, it's been 7 years since my last pregnancy and we had only planned for 3 children.
Fortunately, my parents decided to have the baby and to their delight, it was a girl. I'm the youngest son and my sister is 7 years younger than me. When my sister was born, I looked at her tiny frame and somehow knew in my heart that she was not an accident but a deliberate creation. I wasn't a believer at the time but I knew, somehow, God had created her.
At the time when the world was being created in Genesis 1, the elements were commanded by God to come into being. Genesis 1:1-25. "Let there be ..." and "let there be...". The world as a stage was set. Then in v26. For the first time in recorded history, we see the Triune God conferring with each other. You don't say, "Let us..." as a command, you say it as an invitation. The Triune God having a discussion and an agreement that this was good BEFORE acting. This act was the very act of calling us into being. We come alive as a result of God's deliberate thought and act to create us. Do you know what that means? It means that every conception (not just every birth) is a deliberate thought and act of God. Nothing can be more assuring than that. To know that our existence is not merely to play out our lives on some meaningless journey but to know that we have a purpose in life.
You may be doubting your existence today and ask why you are here on planet earth. I want you to know that God purposed you to come into this world. If you do seek to end your life, ask yourself who started it. And by that, I hope you will go to the source Punchinello did. I hope you will be encouraged today by this short devotional.
My parents did not want to have any more children and they often call it an accident. But I knew it was no accident. My sister was planned by a Greater Power to come into being. That is how much He loves her. To speak plainly, my sister has been the joy of our family ever since she was born. Soon, she will be getting married and be the joy of her husband and her own family. God intended this to happen and I'm very glad my parents listened to the inclination of their hearts.
It is said often but only because it's true - God loves you.
