Sunday 6/30/13 Pastor Michael sermon Reviving Dead Things=A Divine Comeback! Revelation 3:1-6
==============================================================
==============================================================
Everyone likes to hear a good comeback story. We mostly root for the underdog and want them to overcome. Those of us married know that marriage has seasons: hot, warm and cold. They need to be revived to be a good marriage. Years later if not revived, the marriage is on life support! Anything alive has to be revived for it to live. You must invest in it for it to survive. What used to be alive is now dead.
In our text, John is admonishing the church of Sardis for being a dead church. The Sardis city was a wool manufacturing place. Sardis was doing very well as a city but their church which used to be a living church, was now a dying church. Once alive and now dead. This church is in trouble because they got away from the things that made them a great church. They needed a revival, a divine comeback.
1) Remember The Past verse 1:
The church’s past deeds gave them a name but they needed to strengthen things. They need to not depend on what was their great past reputation, but do things for now! Remember our high school weight? We can’t stay in the past because now we cannot buy clothes for our past weight. We all suffer from delusions of past glory. We need to put some work in the now to be good at what we need to do and be.
This Sardis church used to stand out but now they are mixing in with every one else. We have fallen and can’t get up. When we cannot get up on our own, we need to call for help. We have to go back to the place where we first met God. When we were on fire for Him and He changed our circumstances. Make Jesus a Priority! Become radical and don’t just fit God in but make Him the center!
2) Wake UP:
Wake up and see what it is that has us in this dying miserable state. We need to wake up from sleep. Stop pretending that things are all right. Face what is causing you to be dying. With some of us, the enemy has already shot us but we are still moving even though we are dead. It is like when you go rabbit hunting and you shoot the rabbit. He is shot but will keep running a ways but he is dead. When we are alive, we see the enemy from a mile away. When you are alive, you don’t fall for any schemes.
3) Repent of the Past:
Wake up and go in a different direction. Change what you have been doing and do something different. Being repentant is about what you do and not just what you say. Someone can come apologizing to your for talking bad about you. They said they were sorry but went back to talking bad about you again. That’s not repentance. It is when they stop talking about you. Repentance is action not just words. There are church folk who say to God that they are sorry for what they are doing. They go back out, get “that call” and then forget what they were sorry for. We, who want to be alive, need to change some stuff! New attitude! New behavior! Be really repentant-do some stuff different!
4) Retain the Power of the Past verse 4, 5:
Some people in the Sardis church could use the power they had in the past to revive dead things. They were not stained by the world. They were to be models for the rest of the church. They stayed with the Lord, trusted Him and had faith in Him. The others in the church were professing believers, pretending believers or possessing believers. The professing and the pretenders just talked the talk of Christianity and that was it. The possessing believers were real Christians and were alive. They had been knocked down but got back up and kept on going! Our set back was a set up for our comeback! With the stuff we use, we cannot lose! Jesus picks us up and turns us around! We got the real thing! Jesus!
JESUS!!!
