Daniel Patrick Moynihan surely knew what he was talking about when he identified our society’s tendency to “define deviancy down.” (3 D vision) A case in point is one popular player for the Miami Heat known as “The Birdman.” Birdman sports a dyed mohawk haircut and piercings on a long body plastered with tatoos. He seems to have picked up the mantle of the relatively tamer Dennis Rodman of decades past. The fans in Miami regularly give him thunderous standing ovations for his energetic, aggressive style of play. The freakish-looking Birdman may not have been allowed on the court only recently in sports history, but it seems that almost anything goes today. NBA players seem to try to outdo one another with the number and density of the tatoos they display.. I for one am refreshed when I see a player in the midst who lets the quality of his game do the talking and be the display.
