“One Accord” Power (Acts 2:1-2)

“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.”

This message is for many of us who are seeking more of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. This Scripture may contain the key you have been looking for.

When Jesus ascended into Heaven, He commissioned His disciples and promised that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Acts 1 tells us how they stayed in Jerusalem awaiting the fulfillment of the promise and they were not disappointed!

We know that God backs agreement, because Jesus said: “If two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.” Our Father God is pleased when people are in agreement, because it is a reflection of the complete unity that exists between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Agreement does not always happen naturally, as people have their own views and beliefs and their own agendas, but it happens as we align our hearts with the Kingdom. This is probably why Psalm 133 says: “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion. For there the Lord commanded the blessing – life forevermore. God says it is ‘good’ and ‘pleasant’ when people co-operate and act in unity. It attracts the oil of His anointing, which flows through from Jesus (the Head) to every part of the united group, the body. Unity brings the presence of God which refreshes and renews like the mountain dew. The Lord has commanded His blessing to rest on those who are united, and living, working or ministering in one accord and one heart. This includes His covering and protection. (The converse is also true, that disunity exposes us to attack. Jesus said in Matthew 12:25 that a house divided against itself cannot stand.)

On the Day of Pentecost, the disciples of Jesus were in one place and in one accord. They were physically together as well as spiritually aligned with each other in how thirsty they were to see the fulfillment of everything Jesus had promised them. However, this was not the only time they had gathered together. The first chapter of the book of Acts tells us that these lovers of Jesus met together on a regular basis to worship and pray in the upper room, and to wait for what He promised them – the release of the Holy Spirit into their lives and into their generation. Hungry hearts praying in agreement can create an explosion! The Holy Spirit came with such tangible power that the house was filled with a sound from Heaven, like a cyclonic wind, as tongues of fire appeared on each of the people and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. I believe that it was not a little flame on each head as we have seen illustrated, but a mighty flame which engulfed and consumed each person as it descended on them! The rest of what happened is history, with the birthing of the New Testament church and the spreading of the Gospel, with signs and wonders following. It was the start of a new season, and the doorway into a realm of power hitherto unseen by regular people. What were the disciples doing when the Holy Spirit fell upon them?

1) They were together physically, in communication with each other.

2) They were praying and pursuing more and in communication with God.

3) They were in complete agreement, in one accord.

In these last days, we are beginning to see a mighty outpouring of latter day rain, as the Father seeks hearts that are united in His love. He is calling sons and daughters to lay down their own agendas and align with His. He is looking for those hungry hearts who are longing for more of Him, and are willing to press in and take what is theirs by the power of the Blood. God has so much more for our lives, our churches, ministries, cities and nations. It is true that He is raising up individuals everywhere to do great exploits for Him, but there is a corporate anointing He has for communities, which can be received when we come together and set our hearts on Him; when we are one with Him and He knits us in the power of His love to be one with those He has called us to be with.

Dear friend, there is the sound of a mighty rushing wind released from heaven and waiting to be welcomed into your life. Acts 2 says that the sound filled the whole house where the disciples were. The precious Holy Spirit wants to blow into every part of your life and every part of your group, and be the wind of radical change you have been praying for. He wants to touch and transform not only what you consider your spiritual life, but every part of you. He is not looking to just give you with a few goose bumps; He wants to stage a 'takeover' and invade everything that concerns you! As you yield to the fullness of the Holy Spirit, you will see breakthrough in every area of your life and experience the presence of God like never before. He is just waiting for you to ask and receive!

In this end time hour, Abba is calling us to be one with Him. He is calling us to be one with each other. He is calling us to lay aside every situation of discord or offence we have carried and He invites us to yield our hearts completely to Him and say “Holy Spirit, come and rest in us. Teach us how to be one with You and one with each other. Blow on us, mighty Wind from Heaven and overflow us. We want more of Your Presence and power!” If one of us can put a thousand to flight and two of us ten thousand (Deuteronomy 32:30), God definitely backs unity! He has commanded His blessing to rest on a united house and His Word is always fulfilled. May you see great victory and a great outpouring as you unite your heart with others and receive all that is yours in the power of Jesus’ name. It is the power of unity and I am praying right now that the Holy Spirit will enable you! May you experience the Father’s blessing on your life, family and ministry from this day forth and always, in Jesus’ mighty name, amen.

Minoli, this is a great article and makes a strong appeal for unity to enable the Holy Spirit to do His work. It is true that unity is important and we must remember the old dictum: in essentials unity, in non-essentials freedom, in all things charity. Let us pray that all believers will so come together in the spirit of unity that God will be magnified and his influence burst forth on people everywhere. Thank you for this thoughtful article and may God richly bless you.
