In the first part we learned of the “Whore of Babylon” which was shown to John through a vision in Revelation 17:5. But, who is this whore of Babylon with many daughters?
Who are the daughters?
What is the mystery?
What does this prophecy represent?
I will, through the Bible and historical references attempt to identify this “Whore of Babylon”, and what she represents in the prophecies of the book of Revelation and the book of Daniel.
In Revelation John is shown the “Whore of Babylon” by one of the seven angels which had the seven vials
1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. 3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. Revelation 17:1-6
This scripture of a vision shown to John during his exile on the Isle of Patmos, has down through the ages, perplexed those who have tried to interpret all the symbolic language that John used to describe the scenes the Angel was showing him. Earlier Church leaders from the middle ages identified the symbolic language as a false Christian Church with political connotations and connections worldwide. My prayer is that your eyes and mind will be opened by the Holy Spirit to recognize the deceptions that are occurring in the Christian Churches of today and come out of these false Churches which God refers to as Babylon.
A vast number of denominations and Pastors avoid the book of Revelation due to the usage of symbolism used to describe events of things to come. They are afraid of it, due to their misunderstanding of the subject matter and its implications of what it shows of today’s world and they avoid it completely, unwilling to accept the truth, fearing the ramifications associated with standing for the truth of Jesus Christ and his gospel to the world. History is replete with men such as John Huss, John Wycliffe, Martin Luther, etc. who were persecuted and some even murdered by the Church because of their stand against the traditions of man, for the truth as told in the Holy Bible. 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, 28 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. 29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. Acts 5:27-28
There has been a revival of sorts lately as some are beginning to study and research the subject of this Book. There seems to be an air of anticipation of something great about to happen to this planet, and I believe God, with his infinite compassion and love for his creation, through the Holy Spirit, has begun an awakening of his people to seek the truth and come back to his fold.
In verse 1 we have a single angel coming to show John the mystery of the great whore which rules over many people. In prophecy we know that a woman is symbolic of a church, and that waters represent people. With that in mind we understand the woman is a religious order, which has power over many people worldwide.
In verse 2 John is informed of the fornications which the kings of the earth commit with her, and all that follow her are made drunk with the wine of her fornication. Now let’s see if we can break these verses down and get a better understanding of what is being revealed to John in this vision.
Let’s define the term fornication, as used in this verse and how it will pertain to the subject at hand. Fornication basically means sex outside of marriage, but in Biblical terms it also means an idolatrous relationship with other gods (wealth, materialistic accumulations, etc..) , or religions; in other words the abandonment of the true worship of God for idolatrous worship practices based upon man’s whims, desires and traditions. This would include changing God’s laws and substituting them for man’s laws and rituals, to pacify the desires of man, the politically correct crowds, and the pursuit of an agenda.
By deviating from the true worship of God and following the many different interpretations and practices of man, people are made drunk (confused) by these many different interpretations and practices, claiming to be the true word of God. As pointed out in the first section, there are over 1200 different Christian denominations in the USA alone, which should give cause for alarm when it comes to the truth of Biblical doctrine.
According to the Bible, the relationship between Christ and his church is representative of the marriage between a man and a woman. Vows are taken in which they each pledge to cherish, honor, and be faithful in the relationship.
Jesus Christ has joined his people with himself through a promise that He would be their God, and they would be His people, and his alone, the same as a marriage covenant; you each pledge to be faithful and honor the other forever.
And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in loving kindness, and in mercies. Hosea 2:19. and “I am married unto you” Jeremiah 3:14and again in 2 Corinthians, Paul is making reference to marriage of the Church to Christ; For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:2
We see in these verses how the church is the bride of Christ and should be as a chaste virgin, true to her husband, but in Rev.17:3, we see the Church (bride/wife), has become unfaithful in her relationship with Christ by committing fornication through idolatrous worship in following man’s traditions. The majority of the Christian Churches of today are more concerned with community prestige and political correctness than the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
For the most part, the Churches are afraid to preach the true gospel for fear of a backlash from its members, which would affect the financial status of the Church; the government which can revoke the 501(C) 3 exempt status, which would bankrupt and destroy the Church, and the political correct crowds demanding a watering down and sugar-coating of the true word of God. This is an indication as to where the loyalty and faith of the Christian Church lies as it continues committing fornication with the world, and ascribing to worldly ways; their faith being in man rather than the Holy Spirit to lead and guide them.
Rather than follow God, as the Apostle Peter and others did, as recorded in Acts 4:19 and 5:29, they trust and fear man more than God. 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Matthew 15:8,9 (Isa 29:13 Mark 7:7 )
The Churches and the congregants may try as they might, to cover, disguise, deny or whatever else they may decry, but, in a sense the church is in a spiritual nosedive, both in the pulpit and the congregations, and have assumed the characteristics of the Church of Laodecia. 14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Rev.3:14-16
The Preachers, teachers, and the lay people alike are spiritually dead and are as worthless as a barren fig tree, which Jesus himself cursed because of its unfruitfulness. Matthew 21:18-19 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered. 19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away
Does the above verses indicate the state of today’s churches which have withered away from the true gospel, and the teachings of Jesus Christ? Their lack of moral and spiritual guidance has led to the sorry and decadent state of the Church, as well as the society we find ourselves in today.
Studies have shown that a large majority of Christian preachers don’t believe in what they are preaching, and are no more than high paid motivational speakers, lulling the people into a false sense of self-gratification and hope. Church members have been so enamored with the materialistic world of greed and instant self-gratification that God and his word has been left out of the equation. And the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornications; Rev.17:2
Let’s further try to put this verse into perspective of what it is actually saying. Satan in his attempt to form a compromise with Jesus after the forty days of fasting as outlined in Matthew 4 and Luke 4 of the New Testament showed Jesus the entire world with all of its materialistic wealth, glory and power which would be his, if he would bow down, serve and acknowledge the supremacy of Satan. Jesus rebuked Satan, sending him on his way, using the Holy Scripture as his weapon. But, Satan found a more fertile and successful harvest; The Church
Satan turned to the analogy, If you can’t beat’um, join’um!
Satan entered the Church subtly by leading the church to seek worldly gains, allowing paganistic practices in to entice the pagans to join, and bestowing and accepting the honors and favors of the great men and nations of the earth, (fornicating) thereby rejecting Christ and yielding her allegiance to Satan, covering it with a false showing of religious piety.
By seeking the glory and honor of men, she compromised with Satan to attain the power of a church/state religion, cohorting with the kings of the earth. Nearly all nations now have Ambassadors assigned to the Vatican. With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication Rev.17:2
We ask, how has the inhabitants been made drunk with the wine of her fornication, and what is the wine of her fornication? The cup of intoxication represents the false doctrines, the many different interpretations used to placate a certain belief and/or agenda which she teaches and espouses to the world, with her friendships and connections to the greats of the world, along with acquiescing to the various political demands and agendas of the various groups.
Friendship and compromise with the world, will corrupt and dilute the word of God and the faith of the Church. She then entrenches a corrupting influence on the world with the false teachings and doctrines which are opposed to the true teachings of the Holy Bible.
In her zest to seek worldly fame and power, the false teachings and doctrines of the church have become so confused with the truth, and taught for such a long period of time, that it has been accepted as the truth. A drunk becomes more disoriented as he consumes more wine, the same with the church; the more false teachings and doctrines the more confused (drunk) the people become.
In the previous part I emphasized the number of Christian denominations in the USA alone, at over 1,200. Can you honestly say there is no confusion with this many different Christian denominations teaching from the same source, The Holy Bible? and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. Rev.17:2 I would have to say very confused (drunk).
In today’s society one cannot become a preacher or a teacher in any of the denominations without adhering to, and teaching from the denominations books and creeds, which in essence, and in most cases are placed above the Holy Bible. Should a teacher or Pastor deviate from these creeds, they are replaced.
There are people today who follow the creed and tradition of their Churches as passed down through the generations, never checking the scriptures for accuracy against what is being taught, and will fight you tooth and nail before even considering any other interpretation, regardless of what the scriptures say. and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. Rev.17:2
An intoxicated (drunk) person is very irrational and cannot be reasoned with in any sane degree. So are the entrenched Christians of today, following a do what-ever feels good style of doctrine which is not scripturally based. … having a form of Godliness but denying the power therof… 2Timothy 3:5 and again in Mark 7:7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men
The Church of Rome withheld the Bible and scriptures from the people, and instead taught the people with its false doctrines, scriptural changes and practices, requiring all men to accept the teachings as truth. Those opposed were severely punished, as history so boldly records.
Today’s Protestant Churches, which are the offspring of the Church of Rome, are still following the lead set by the Roman Catholic Church with its false teachings and paganistic practices, even though such brave men as Martin Luther, John Wesley, John Huss, and others fought, and many gave their lives for the true Gospel of Jesus to be taught in place of the false teachings which the Church of Rome was promulgating upon the people.
Verse 3 has John observing this woman siting upon a scarlet colored beast full of blasphemy and having seven heads and ten horns. We already understand that the woman represents the church, but who is the beast? A beast in prophecy represents a kingdom or nation. So we now see, that if the woman represents the church, and the beast represents a nation or kingdom, then we have a church state religious order which is worldwide since she sits upon many waters, and water represents people in prophecy.
This woman (church) riding on a beast (political power) rode roughshod over Christendom and the Kings and nations of Europe and the Mideast for over 1200 years, forcing her false doctrines and practices on the people with utter disdain for the true Gospel of Jesus Christ; was none other than the Church of Rome with her political power, located on the Seven Hills of Rome as indicated in Revelation 17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.
Classical writers such as, Horace, Virgil, and others, in their writings, often referred to Rome as the City of Seven Hills. The first century Christians reference to Rome as Babylon is evidenced by 1 Peter 5:13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
As we read further down in verses 10 we see the seven hills also represent seven kings; 10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. I will get into this verse later.
I am not going to explain the seven kings at this point, but will at a later point. At this juncture, I am merely trying to show the woman riding the beast as being the Church of Rome with its Papal system of religion and politics, and how the Christian denominations are the daughters of this woman known as the “Whore of Babylon
Continuing in verse 3 we are told the woman is full of names of blasphemy. What does full of names of blasphemy indicate?
Let’s first define “blasphemy”. Blasphemy is the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for a religious deity or the irreverence towards religious or holy persons or things (Wikipedia). A contemptuous or profane act, utterance, or writing concerning God or a sacred entity. the act of claiming the attributes of deity (Merriam Webster dictionary)
By observing the definitions of blasphemy, we see that an act of claiming to be God, or an act of insult, such as changing from what God has commanded, to what man desires is all considered an act of blasphemy towards God. Is there a Church or Churches which carry out acts of blatant blasphemy as defined by the dictionary?
Let’s look at a couple of texts in the Bible, in which Jesus himself is accused of blasphemy by the Scribes and Pharisees, so as to further define the meaning of blasphemy.
Matthew 26:64,65 64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. (Ps 110:1, Dan 7:13) 65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. (Emphasis is mine)
We see in Matthew 26:64,65 where Jesus is claiming to be the Son of Man (God) and will be at the right hand of power with the Father. We see again in Mark 2:5-7where Jesus is claiming to forgive sins; 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. 6 But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, 7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?(Emphasis is Mine)
These texts from Matthew and Mark show what blasphemy, in relation to the Bible is. Jesus is being accused of blasphemy because he claims to be the Son of God and can forgive sins, both are blasphemous statements from a sinful human, but not from Jesus as he is God and therefore is not being blasphemous to God. Is there a person or religion on this planet that claims to be God and can forgive sins? Think about that for a minute.
Going back to verse 3 we read; … and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy,… I asked the question earlier, as to whether or not there is a person or religion which claims the power to forgive sins and takes the place of God. There is a Church which makes these very claims of blasphemy and is honored the world over and is very much into the political field, as well as other worldly activities, and that Church is the Church of Rome or better known as the Roman Catholic Church and its Papal system of religion.
For he is of so great dignity and power that he forms one and the same tribunal with Christ. Moreover the superiority and the power of the Roman Pontiff by no means pertains only to heavenly things, but also earthly things, and to things under the earth, and even over the angels, whom he is greater than Prompta Bibliotheca Canonica Article 2, papa summary Items 14 ,16 (Lucius Ferraris)
The above quote is a deliberate and boastful act of blasphemy by the Roman Catholic Church, against God, by claiming to be even greater, and above the Angels of Heaven as well as equal to Jesus Christ the only Son of God.
