I wrote these lyrics to the Leonard Cohen "Hallelujah" music, though maybe someday I will get inspired and write my own music for it:
I'll love you, Lord, with all my heart.
From You I never want to part.
I made these promises to You sincerely.
But I broke my oath so many times.
I've lied, I've hurt, committed crimes,
When I should have filled my soul with Hallelujah.
I will praise You! Hallelujah!
May You hear me! Hallelujah!
I stumble ev'ry day, oh Lord.
I walk away instead of toward
The love of which You've spoken to me clearly.
It tears me up, this life of sin.
Without You, Lord, I cannot win
Over darkness that will smother Hallelujah.
I pray that soon these trials will end.
I cry to You, "I need a friend."
But most days only leave me feeling weary.
I beg You, mend my blackened heart,
Before I fail and fall apart.
My soul is crying out for Hallelujah!
I've said it many times before,
That I would like to know You more.
I hope You'll take me back, so very dearly.
I'm running now; I call Your name.
Lord, God, please wash away my shame.
Give me Your strength to sing my Hallelujah.
I love you, Lord, I know you care.
Your burden is not much to bear.
I came so close to ruin-- very nearly.
But You picked me up and took my hand.
You changed my life; now I understand.
Your mercy never ends. Oh Hallelujah!
