My lips cannot speak,
For they know to remain silent
To words which betray me,
Telling the person I hold most dear
That I do not care enough.
Spoken words have no power to
Convince in ways that my love can--
Love, disguised as meaningless speech,
Impossible to understand with perfect ears
That cannot listen.
My lips and your ears betray us both!
They function only to transmit and
Receive sound, but sound becomes
Words, and words you refuse to believe.
How can I tell you how I feel?
When will you listen with your soul,
Denying the untruths that
Linger in your mind,
Remnants, many tones,
Sounds that once cried, "I love you!"
But now jumble themselves into
Thoughts that say, "She doesn't care"?
Even your eyes, your flawless eyes,
Deceive you as well.
They read the words I write
With tired hands,
Trying to convey that I love you.
Yet your eyes convince you that
They only see letters, symbols,
Shapes in varying patterns of blue ink
That shift to hide their meaning.
But the meaning is still there!
The senses fool us both!
Words are daggers when spoken in anger.
They tear at the heart and dig themselves
Deeper until the pain lingers forever.
Does that mean I love you any less?
My love has not vanished in a raging
Sea of angry words.
Your ears hear sounds, yet noise is not love.
Letters confuse, rearranging themselves into
Meaning that was never meant before.
You see phantoms and ghosts,
Words that vanish and reappear in
Flashes of grey light.
If I write to you, do you have to
Make my words mean
Something other than what was intended?
Do you love me?
I am fooled by my own ears and eyes.
Walk blind and hear not!
The Devil only trips us and tells us
Lies when we open our eyes and listen.
I love you!
Nothing I can say or write can tell you that.
If you don't believe my words, then
Believe my heart!
My heart will not betray you.
It cannot speak; it cannot hear,
Yet it will tell you the truth and listen.
I am trapped in my own inadequacies.
I cannot express how I feel from a country
A lifetime away.
Please forgive me my faults which
Prevent my true feelings, thoughts, love,
From revealing themselves to you.
Listen to my voice; read my letters,
Call me a liar if you want to.
But I know the Truth, and He
Lives in me!
He lives in you as well.
If you cannot trust what I say and know
That I love you deeper than my own soul,
Will you please listen to Him?
